Custom frame painting?

I've got an old Mk I Scott Foil Team Issue frame that I still really like but the paint scheme looks dated and I'm really bored of looking at it.

Thinking that I might be able to rekindle my relationship with it if I gave it a custom paint job...

Any recommendations? Kustomflow seems to be the most prominent option online, but I get the feeling that there are quite a few others.

Google custom painting and airbrushing then give someone local a call. It all depends what you want doing and whether or not they would take on a bicycle. Most would I should think, it’s just another job and some might find it a bit different and a challenge.

I use a guy in Warrington who primarily does custom racing motorcycle fairings and helmets, but he is a cyclist and loves custom cycling jobs. He did a bespoke finish on some Pro bars for my Colnago Concept build to complement the black and red paint scheme.

  • depends what you want doing to it makes your selection of establishment - single/two block colour design is simple and most people will do a very good job, some technical Colnago style thing will need someone specialist

also, do you have designs in mind? and type of paint, decals, budget?

  • Kustomflow, Ooey and Fat Creations are by far the best in the UK, but their waiting lists are looooong. Fat Creations are IMO the best of all three.

    Lots of ideas, thanks.

Like the look of Kustomflow and Fat Creations.

It would be silly to spend more than the frame is currently worth on the 2nd hand market so I probably wouldn't want to spend more than a few hundred quid (certainly no more than £700). Fancy something like a metalic green or purple, maybe a two-tone fade, with some basic logo reproductions.
  • I've got exactly same frame as you, and have had the same thoughts about refurb in the past (although still haven't bothered).

I'd agree, if it's something fairly basic ie one block colour, or maybe two, i;d consider other non-"arty", spray bods too. Target Composites might be worth a look...

In which case, Argos Cycles - well worth a look. http://argoscycles.com/

I reckon that with a new paint job the frame would look pretty contemporary - there haven't really been many advances in basic frame design in the last seven or eight years really, other than more tyre clearance if that's your thing..

Luckily basic block colours and less "busy" logos seem to be in right now, so it's not difficult to do. You have to get the brand logos exactly right though otherwise it screams respray.. I guess the dedicated bike places are better at that.
  • I used a garage that actually specialised in custom paint jobs on cars, engine tuning etc. Got an awesome pearlescent paint job for £30 :). That hadn't done bikes before so had to go through the areas for taping off, but other than that they were great and enjoyed the difference so much they started offering as a service and I know several people who have used them since all very happy.

this - for simple one colour/two colour jobbies find a decent bodyshop and will do it for a pennies compared to a bike man and the job will be just as good.

So for £30 these body shops will hand sand the original paint down to the raw carbon/alu/steel, use exceptional paint and lacquers while buffing in between coats. They'll also stencil logos/designs rather than using crappy vinyl with a bit of lacquer over the top. Yeah right they will. You'll end up with a bike that's put on a couple of hundred grams and look cack.

The amount of work that Ali at Fat Creations puts into just a single colour job is fantastic. He's also posted a few videos of the weight before and after on a Specialized Tarmac from a customer who went down the cheap route. Here's one example.

Here's an example of how deep he goes https://www.facebook.com/fatcreations/v ... 323768178/
  • who knows - perhaps they might.

Genuine question. Do you really think the hashtags are entertaining or are they just posted in the hope of getting a rise?

Addicted Bikes in Hull. Does some brilliant work.
  • I’m reading this with interest because I’ve got a Specialized Tarmac carbon frame in the loft that’s begging for a respray. I wanted to build it into an S Works replica with a Lamborghini Gallardo orange paint job with gloss black forks and S Works decals on the down tubes. Colour Tech Custom Sprays was a name that was suggested. They’re based in Dartford.

It’s got a couple of problems with it which I’ll ask about later.

If your putting (probably) £500 into a paintjob would not be better of selling and buying a real S-Works

If it cost that much it’s staying in the loft!

I've not used them but I did have them recommended to me so got a quote should I feel the Colnago Master requires it.
Full respray and logo replacement £250. Can't remember if that included the chrome. A couple of years ago mind...
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.
