Rim replacement - what should I go for?

My handbuilt (by me) Pacenti SL23 on DuraAce 9000 hubs with Sapim spokes (Laser/D-Lite mix) have done around 12,000km and haven't missed a beat but having seen a mate's SL23s pull a spoke out of the rim bed (not built by me I hasten to add) I am ever conscious that this could happen to me at some point.

I'm not about to do this immediately but what rims would people swap out for here? I can't remember if I've already asked this (small child has addled my brain) so apologies if so.#

The requirements are: wide (like SL23), tubeless (like SL23), easy to fit tyres (NOT like SL23) and no expectation to fail horribly (not like SL23).

I am resigned to having to get new spokes, but clearly I would want to make good use of Dura Ace hubs for as long as possible.

Thanks for any ideas.

Kinlin Xr26t has the same erd and is the rim the pacenti sl23 always wanted to be but never was. Best bit you wont need new spokes.

Are you getting more in Malcolm? I see they're sold out at the moment (in 24H and 28H symmetrical).

The rear 28H is symmetrical on mine (not sure an asymmetrical SL23 rim was available back then) would I have to get a symmetrical rim to replace it or would the difference be ok to re-use spokes on an asymmetrical replacement? If this requires more calcs no worries, but seem to recall people saying it makes very little difference if symmetrical or not (to the spoke length) but I may be misremembering.

Your looking ag ygd wrong listing. The gloss black rims are not coming back. I have the Matt finish rims. Those are listed separately.

When it comes to symmetric vs asymmetric the spoke lengths differ by 0.3mm so not alot.

    Forza would be another option

Forza is different ERD I thought. They do look pretty much the same and I like the look but ideally would reuse spokes.

Firza has a different red and spokes will be unusable. I don't think it's any coincidence the kinlin has the same red as the pacenti sl23.

    “Rate this translation” :)

I’ll doubtless go with the Kinlin eventually, thanks all.

The quoted difference is 3mm so 1.5mm per spoke. I know some people have rebuilt onto Forza without a problem. It may depend on the hub/original spoke length choice to some degree but as the new ERD is longer not shorter I'd guess that most people would get away with re-using spokes TBH albeit that the lengths aren't 100% spot on.

  • You get away with 1mm or 2mm difference but 3 or 4mm depending on which version of the sl23 the op has is just asking for trouble. With alloy nipples unless you spokes were too long to begin with you will get nipple failures. With brass niples the nipples may be fine but you might get spoke failures. The wheel will have exposed threads though as even 14mm nipples wont cover them up. If your spokes start off a tad short then this makes matter even worse.
