What are the best parts to change my Raleigh team Banana bike to a modern chainset setup?

Hi everyone,
I sent my Raleigh team Banana (531C frame) bike to be re-sprayed a few weeks ago, and I want to ride it again, but with a chainset that’s closer to the compact setup on my modern bike, as the 42/52 front ring setup, along with the ridiculously low numbers of teeth on the rear cassette sprockets, is just too brutal a setup for Cornish roads!
What would be the best way of doing this be? I want to keep the downtube levers, as I don’t want to change the look/setup of the bike too much, and want to keep it as original as possible. It currently has an 80s Shimano 105 groupset on it.
Any advice would be much-appreciated!

SJS and Spa are my go to people for retro stuff.
@ O.P. how many speeds on the rear? What width hub? Is it an old-school screw-on freewheel or a freehub / cassette?
If it's the former on a 126mm hub you could probably fit a bigger range 7 speed freewheel. If the latter on a 130mm hub you can fit a much bigger 10 speed cassette (needs a 10 speed chain then)
If the existing rear mech doesn't cope with the bigger sprockets you can fit a modern silver finish RD like https://www.wiggle.co.uk/campagnolo-vel ... erailleur/ and it will still look pretty authentic0 -
I put this on my '84 bike to allow sensible use:

Looks OK, heavy, cheap.0 -
