Riding in Canberra

Dear All,
I will be visiting a friend in Canberra, Australia in December. He doesn't ride but I was looking to get out for a few day's riding to have a look at the hills around the town.
I don't want the hassle of transporting my own bike to Australia just for a couple of days in the saddle so I would really appreciate any advice people can give about hiring a bike in Canberra. I have looked online and it's quite pricey - about 50 quid a day. If anyone has any suggestions of alternative ways to get out on the cheap I would really appreciate it.

I saw these but the cheapest day rate is AU$80 - about GBP40, which I think is a lot. I may bite the bullet, get a bike transport box and take my own....
