Shipping bike abroad for holiday

Has anyone shipped a bike abroad for a trip rather than take it on a flight? Just looking at my options to see if there is a better way than lugging my bike box around multiple airports.

If so, who did you use? How did you find the experience in general?

    sounds more hassle and worry than its worth tbh.

    you could just get a courier company to drop it of and pick it up from your doorstep I suppose. all of them do this service.

    no chance of hiring out there?

    It's a long time ago, but the last time I shipped anything abroad it took 5 months to arrive

    Have had a look at a few couriers and pricing is comparable to flight costs, get what you are saying about the risk of it though, lost or delayed are a factor.

    Try not to hire these days as I had a couple of mixed experiences previously with bikes not being as described/sizing wrong etc but it is an option.

    I may well just take the bike box but if there is a (relatively) simple delivery service that is cheaper and has good reviews I'd give it a go.

    where to? Places like Majorca have a great range of hire bikes. Some places maybe less so. DHL or Fedex will give you a quote and an idea of time.

    I've used a courier a couple of times for races - they collect the bikes all over the country in a huge van and drive it over together with your kit. Great way to do it but unless your holiday clashes with one of the ironman events - it's no use.

    Flying with a bike box is pretty simple though.

    I took my bike to oz with me.
    Got a chain reaction bike bag, stripped the bike and wrapped everything in bubble wrap.
    Loaded into the plane home with LOADS of fragile stickers on it.
    No problem travelling with it and not a single mark on the bike, was handled well by the airline.

    Just thought I would update. Used this company in the end https://sherpr.com/.

    No real issues, the bike got there well ahead of time. Took slightly longer on the return journey but that didn't cause me any problems. The box they supply are far more robust than they look and there was no damage to it so they obviously take good care of them in transit. Overall I would go with them again if I have any issues getting the bike box on a plane.
