    As I said on Twitter - probably the most underrated rider ever in English language cycling.

    I went years as a cycling fan before hearing about him. But just look at those palmares.

    He’s like a olden day’s Nibali, but better.
    Interestingly, bearing in mind how folk bang on about how the old heroes were fabulous all season long, he didn’t double up much on the years he won big on the Tours with the years he won big on the one day races...

    Met him in Italy a couple of years ago. Nice approachable guy but seemed pretty tired for his age to be honest. RIP.
