Just ordered a pair of these from CycleSurgery. GIRO Empire E70 knit for 99 of your English pounds. Still seem to be around the 140 plus price at Tredz, CRC, Evans et al

Anyone have these and have any opinions about them. I'm quite tempted.

Also, how is Giro sizing, I usually wear Northwave which come up a little small.

I wear a 43 in Shimano, Giro, Fizik and found the 43 in Northwave a little too big, if that helps.

Empires in general are the best shoes I've ever worn. Brilliant sole, adjustable foot beds and laces just work brilliantly for a perfect fit. I've never had to re-tie on a ride.

    Good spot.

    Bought.

    Anyone want to swap a brand new Ultegra 8000 52/36 170mm chainset for a 50/34 170 or 172.5?
Or I would be happy to just swap the rings?

try the 52/36 you might be surprised how good that combo is, paired with a 30 or 32 cassette is a winner

    Agreed.

I'm not powerful, but get on very well with a 52\36 & a 53\36, both with an 11-28 cassette on the back.
I generally like to spin, and enjoy hills.

    Nah, I'm a spinner.
I have many bikes, chainsets ranging from 50/34, 46/34 and one with 46/30. Most with 11-32 cassettes.
My average cadence is mostly around 100 and I like long hilly rides.
I never feel undergeared on the big ring and still, very occasionally want for a lower gear uphill if I'm tired or just want to spin.
Yes, I "could get up anything" with larger gears and working harder but why would I bother? I have plenty of larger gears that can be used when I want to push myself uphill.

I'm a spinner at around 100rpm and I'd never go back from 52/36 to 50/34. An Ultegra long cage will take an 11-34 cassette which means nearly 1:1 gearing which will spin you up anything.

100 rpm  feck that has me blowing out my arse on the turbo, my road test ride earlier in the week was 65-70 rpm in the 52 and almost 80 in the 36, which makes my climbing better and i'm not that bad already at climbing, so i need to up shift on the 52 and match the 80 rpm for full sweet spot.

Not sure where to ask this, having trouble locating a Sram rival 1x groupset at a reasonable price, any pointers would be greatly appreciated

Get the first one, if any. I haven't personally used Microshift gear but have seen plenty of comments along the lines of "does the job", "perfectly OK". What I've never seen is anyone arguing that it's better than the SRAM/Shimano equivalent.

You'd want to clarify the full spec as the listing is pretty short on details. Which wheelset does it come with as the listing mentions the American Classics and the V sprints. Likewise, how much of the groupset is Apex and what are the bits that aren't?

I would agree on the Apex Bolero - the last one looks the 'nicest' but you are after a commuter, so I assume want mudguards.

They appear, without any indepth checking, to be on a similar par with Decathlon biked, so you might want to check them out too.
Also, I gather Go Outdoors run with a very well rated line up of mountain bikes, and I think they might be starting with road bikes too, so probably worth a look.

EDIT: Having had a brief look at Go Outdoors and Decathlon, the most they can muster it would seem is 8 spd rear cassettes, where as this one is 10spd, so much more modern, and consequently a bigger closer range of gears.
If you stick one in your basket, and leave it there for a few days, they sometimes send you a 5% discount code, although whether they would do it for something of such high value I am not sure, and whether you would want to risk it going out of stock in your size too.

Here's the setup I have on no less than 4 CX bikes (mine and my daughters)
    - Cheap used 2x10 shifters (Red, Force, Rival, Apex according to preference)
    - Remove shift lever and internal gubbins from left shifter (10 mins job, reversible, plenty of instructions online)
    - MTB clutch mech (I use X9 type 2, but you can go up/down the range as preferred)
Job done. Also works with 10-speed hydraulic (S700) shifters. Never investigated whether it works with 11 speed, but I suspect it would.
    Pannier, 120rpm.

£200 for the pair, or £180 if you have 200 reward points.

If https://www.decathlon.co.uk/triban-rc-5 ... 54421.html is flat mount, could be a nice brake upgrade.

I feel like a broken record on this but if you want to build up a bike with those RS505 shifters and calipers you could do much worse than the Dolan RDX frameset, still on sale for £200, flat mount brakes and full carbon fork, includes headset and seatpost, has mudguard bosses....

Just ordered a pair from Tredz for £66.50, £71.50 (in Small and Medium only though) plus (or minus) the ubiquitous £5 off code.

Looks like I bagged the last black and yellow pair (Merlin still have those at £90), fancied trying a new colour scheme.

Is it fair to think of them as a long omloop, or not remotely?

Dont know the Omloop. They are like the Sorpasso between knee and waist, with a think lycra calf and a lighter bit around the body. I found they really increase the range as they keep the key bits of the body as warm as the Sorpasso, you can put a warmer layer around the body if its cold and my calves dont feel the cold so much. So they cover most of the cold stuff but unlike the sorpassos they can be worn far longer into the early months of the year without overheating.

I'd second that, bought them on a whim last year for a similar price, really useful for that 10 degree day, which seems to be what most nice London winters days end up at.

Wow. Might give it a go, I've never tried a turbo before so at least I shouldn't be disappointed :)

Can you combine it with one of these so you have an mtb turbo?

While the price might be much of a deal, what I did notice was that it gave me the option to pay £38pcm for 5 month, interest free... I don't buy much from Amazon, but never seen that option before.
