  • Yeah, I posted this earlier in the small race thread.
He's been air lifted to a reanimation team in a Polish hospital.
    Wait and see time, now.

It was reported that he was taken by helicopter to hospital but later they said he was not well enough to be taken by helicopter so was instead taken by ambulance.

Not good. Hope he's OK :(
It's only a bit of sport, Mun. Relax and enjoy the racing.
  • Sadly, the worst possible news is now breaking in Poland. Yet to be confirmed, I stress.

22 years old, that's just terrible. Seemed a popular member of the peloton.

Terrible news. Thoughts for his family and the team.
I thought I'd read earlier today (before the crash) that he was considered a rising star with GC potential in bigger races.

He had a strong classics campaign, showed some potential. Very sad to hear of his passing

Oh man, that is awful news!

Not that it matters at this point in time but was there anything significant/strange about the crash or just a terrible accident?

It seems he hit a stack of concrete pipes.

I last saw him on the penultimate "Vive le Velo", of the Tour. It's Belgium's post stage chat show. He was on there with Eddy Planckaert and Hendrik Redant.

Het Nieuwsblad have just posted this image from the show.

  • Some rumours beginning to circulate re the circumstances and hence the possible cause.
It seems he had already lost contact with the group and crashed alone on a straight piece of road.

This is really sad, only 22, awful
  • Unbelievably sad news, he came out into the fan area after the U-23 race in Innsbruck much to the delight of the Belgian fans.

  • Footage has emerged that confirms he was still in the bunch when the crash happened, so further rumours have no foundation.

Stage 4 will be neutralised. Riders will do one lap. No racing. If Lotto-Soudal take the start they will lead over the line together.

Christ he looks about 17, which is the age of most of my football team, I know he's 22 but his whole life ahead of him. Cycling is pretty much the best thing I know outside of having kids and family but at times like this it's the worst.

The podium of the 2017 Tour de l'Avenir. He was second. Extreme contrasting fortunes for the top two.

Footage has emerged that confirms he was still in the bunch when the crash happened, so further rumours have no foundation.

There was an extra news bulletin yesteday on VTM where a police spokesman said he collided with another rider and fell into a ditch at the side of the road. The ditch contained some concrete sewer pipes he fell with almost his whole torso on top the pipes and went into immediate cardiac arrest. The rest of the story is already known to all of us, sadly. :(

I was thinking the same, the photos bring it home just how young he was. From the team comments it sounds like a completely freak accident. So sad.
