Upgrading to Carbon Wheels...

Currently riding a Pinarello F8 which has Fulcrum Racing 3's on it.

Wanting to move up to carbons and love the look of a deeper rim so looking at 50's.

Was considering the Prime RR-50 V2 Carbon Clinchers (£569.99) or some Mavic Cosmic Pro Carbons (£686.99).

Not really up on wheels and the weights - Mavic 1650g, Prime 1607g, Fulcrum 1560g make it seem a decision not worth making.

Appreciate there's lots on offer out there - looking to purchase through the Bike to Work Scheme so it feels free and it keeps it off the radar to allow an increase in the n+1 soon , which then keeps me limited on stores to use. Will spend up to the full £1000 but a bonus if I don't.

Just after a nod to say it's worth it before I order.

Thanks

If you want them and can afford them, then it's worth it. Justifying the actual, real-world benefits is going to be a lot more difficult though...

If they make you ride more then they are worth it.

I noticed the lighter weight and quicker acceleration for the first 5 minutes after which point any perceived advantage drops away.

    They look the nuts though

Completely worth it - I have them on all my bikes (albeit it tubs but the principle is still the same)

    Nicer to ride
    Look cooler
    Aero benefits
Latest rim widths etc that you would be looking for in clinchers
    Make a cracking noise
Make you feel good about your bike
Make you want to ride your bike
    Make you smile and laugh
Make iother people even more jealous of your bike
    Usuable all year round
    Yours will be free.

Very very limited downsides - in fact, apart from some people saying that cross wionds affect them (imo & experience winds only affect 80mm upwards, 50s are fine)

The only advice I can say is to get them as plain as possible: that way you can change them from bike to bike without them looking weird or aging - I have a set of Mk1 Planet X 50s that are perfect and lovely wheels but have decals on them that have aged.

But them Buy them. Buy them now. And be sure to post a picture

These look peelable if you dont like the stickers

    https://www.wiggle.co.uk/prime-rr-50-se ... -wheelset/

The main benefits with mine I find it once they spin up they hold speed, and above say 20mph you do notice the benefit.

But on the flip side you notice turning more as your turning more of a sail, not as much an issue on new shape rims but my old slab sides cross winds are not fun. .

That said, I love riding on them, you get compliments an jealous looks, plus the noise, its that classic whirr, an out the saddle its only better.

Plus, they look banging with tan walls... (My OE Reynolds Strike SDV 66, 66mm deep rims)

Mavismc Cosmics with the exalith rims would be my advice out of those 2.

Decals come off easy enough (ime) with the help of a hair dryer, and inkmyride will knock you up new decals in what ever colour you fancy.

Get chinese ones. Same rims and same hubs as most places. 1/2 the price.

    Farsports, hongfu/dengfu, flyxii, light-bicycle.

Any rim width, depth, braking surface, spoke count, hub type, tyre interface you can ask for.

Good point, plus lots use Bitex or Novatec hubs both known alright brands and easy to maintain

those stickers are exactly what I was talking about - vile.

heat gun or hair dryer asap.

also have a look at Planet X - Visions are in the sale and so are Selcof, which are Chinese rim plus Novatec hubs - same wheel as PX but with a different sticker.

Avoid Hunts: massively overpriced, not that great and built with the same components in the same factory by the same guy as every other Chinese wheel but with a 50% mark up.

It's a front (or a back?) for deep rimming. Especially if big and black.

Worth checking out Spokesman Wheels handbuilt carbons, though you presumably wouldn't be able to use Cycle to Work with them.

I just had some Farsports 50mm deep wheels delivered, with DT Swiss 350 hubs. Came in at £520 (including pre-paid tax). Weight (excl. QR) was 1.63kg.
Should be getting their first test ride on Sunday.
Will be my first experience of deeper rim wheels so can't wait.

I just don't understand this comment, as my experience has been that Hunt offer very good value for money. For example, my Mason X 650B gravel wheels are bang up to date on shape, lightweight and cost just £319. When I looked at carbon wheels I found a lot of the chinese wheels were still very narrow width, which I wouldn't go back to (I bought Roval CL50s in the end). All the magazine reviews also rate Hunt as very good value. Have you got something personal against them?
  • What put me off buying Hunts is the absolutely horrible freehub noise. Came very close to buying then came across a local sportive with a few riders on them. Hunt are very good at marketing open rim designs and you get the backup of a UK retailer - they seem reasonably sound at the moment and a more professionally set up outfit than Zuus appeared to be. Not seen any accounts later than March 2018, but they were turning a profit.

As for me, I ended up buying Token Ventoux Disc wheels (52mm) and they are nice looking, make a good noise and feel fast. Had them on a deal from Probikekit. Not that I'm probably any faster but that's not really the point, is it? :)

Mavic Cosmic Pro Carbons aren't full carbon. They're an alloy rim with a carbon fairing. For true full carbon you need the Mavic Cosmic Pro Carbon UST which are around double the price. Good wheels, but 40mm rather than 50mm. Good wheels though. The Comete are even more expensive.
I ride a bike. Doesn't make me green or a tree hugger. I drive a car too.
  • Another +1 for the Chinese wheels.

Just do your research before you buy.

The only downside is you have to wait 3 weeks or so to arrive.
