Mavic Cosmic freehub loose

Looking for advice. I won't name the supplier because generally I've been happy with the service I've received from them in the past.

I bought a set of wheels to race on (Mavic Cosmics) - I've had two sets of these in the past and have been happy with them. They arrived with the freehub body and end cap completely loose on the axle (literally came away from the wheel as I pulled the plastic damage protector off the cap)

The service rep told me this is a common problem as Mavic freehubs use pressure to fix onto the wheel and can sometimes 'come away' from the hub when the wheel isn't inserted into the dropouts on a bike. That sounds like absolute b*llocks to me - because every time you changed a flat you'd run the risk of the hub falling off the poxy wheel when you took it off the bike - but have I just been lucky with the seven previous sets of Mavics I've owned in nine years? I've been advised that it's easy to fix myself, but tbh, having had a set of wheels (different manufacturer) that were a bit of a lemon previously, I'm inclined to return the rear for a replacement.

    Youre right, thats total crap it shouldn't fall off

    Though some wheels like the dtswiss ones the freehub can pull off but are held on by the end cap which are tight.


    send them back, noting the serial numbers and get a proper set

    take them back to the shop and either get a replacement then or a refund. It's not your place to be either repairing them or sending them off for service.

    I went back and told them I wanted it fixed. Returned the wheel and got it back yesterday - fitted cassette and there's massive drag on the hub when I stop turning the cranks, and the hub 'sticks' when I turn the crank backward. They're going back for a refund - after the cheeky b*stards suggest I take it to a bike shop to fix!

    Had this exact problem with a pair of Mavic Cosmic Exalith a couple of years ago. Had to post them back to supplier at my expense, having been told that in the circumstances, my return postage would be refunded. I didn't want the same wheels back (for obvious reasons) and the cheeky bar stewards would not refund my postage costs. Shocking service really. I'm happy to name and shame at every opportunity, it was Tri UK in Yeovil

    Refund received without question, so at least that's in their favour. It was Sigma - who I've never had a problem with before. However, the wheels were clearly not right, and I thought asking me to take them to an LBS to fix them was a bit of a cheek to say the least!

    Have now got the same wheels from somewhere else and they're fine - just like the previous two sets I had were, and the two sets of Ksyriums I've had.
