Not quite as incredible as Dan Roan ever getting linked to some proper journalism.

I guess this means the Yorkshire tweed suit will be heading to the charity shop along with the Sky kit.

'This appears to be major blow to British cycling'

    It's a pity, but a major blow?

He seems desperate to drag cycling in this country down. The question for me is why?
    - Was he unable to keep up with his mates on their BMXs as a kid?
    - Did his cyclist uncle do nasty things to him?
    - Did his time at Sky Sports end under a cloud radicalising him against Team Sky and any related organisation?

Perhaps he should just stick to making crude statements about dead football club owners.
It's only a bit of sport, Mun. Relax and enjoy the racing.

Wait for Roanie to overstep and get the lawyers for 'Britain's richest man' on his sorry ass.

Hmmm guy achieves massive success and might not have been totally passive. What a surprise.

    Let’s bring down everything successful.

Roan is from the tabloid school of sports reporting. It's all about fanning the flames of a story with the aim of getting a sacking/resignation. They will tell you this is doing some sort of public service - 'holding people to account', but mostly it's about getting nominated for journalism awards.

Brailsford and Sky didn't read the script though - he not only stayed but went from strength to strength, winning four GTs on the bounce. This really pi55ed them off. So they keep plugging away in revenge.

When Sky withdrew you could see the glee in their reporting as they tried to make out it was their scandals that brought them down. Brailsford was finally felled. But then he came back stronger again, seemingly effortless. What a kick in the balls.

If you look at Roan's twitter account, he never actually tweets about actual sport. Nothing about results, performances, goals etc...

Whilst his contribution to cycling in Britain cannot be overstated, it would be good if it could be spread around the rest of the country a bit now...

Shame but if he's been feathering his own nest when he shouldn't have been then it's right that he goes.

The Red Rose tourism group need to have a word with RCS and we can have Giro di Lancashire...or Flanders Classics for Ronde Van Rawtenstall/ Omloop Van Bowland.....

We could have Salford Roubaix - the A6 between Walkden and Westhoughton is like riding on the fookin Arenberg :D

Seriously though the Forest of Bowland is the best kept secret in British cycling. The Trough, Cross o Greet, Bowland Knotts, the Nick, Birdy Brow and Jeffrey Hill are as good (better in the casdbof the Trough & Bowland Knotts) as anything the wrong side of the Pennines

Does Roan mean "British Cycling" the organisation or British cycling i.e., cycling in Britain... I assume the former!

It probably is a blow to the latter as Verity seems to have been very good/determined at getting big races into Britain.

I don't see how it's directly a blow to BC the organisation, other than that perhaps fewer top tier races might come to the UK? He seems to be trying to cast Verity's misdeeds as somehow having to do with BC... An organisation Verity was not a member of.

I think it’s a little more complex tbh.

It all happened around the time of a big family tragedy.

Theres some proper tough cycling just there plus it looks great!
  • Maybe we ought to reserve judgement about his actions?
If the story doesntv”leak” maybe there isn’t much of s story. Apparently his sister died in January, let’s wait and see if the story has any newsworthiness, to be honest I think the guy is a diamond... would be disappointing if his tenure ended this way, but I for one am NEVER going to forget the 3 days in Yorkshire that he helped deliver!
If he is ill , I hope he gets well soon.

well he does use "British cycling" in the article and not "British Cycling", so I dont think he's linking to the organisation, fwiw I dont think Roan has overstated things there too much, though I dont agree Verity is credited with helping gender equality in making the TdY slightly longer for the womens race, but Team Ineos have chosen the Tour de Yorkshire to launch, for whatever reason, so it will be the highest profile edition of the race & it does seem to be "controversial" even if its mainly a press fuelled controversy.

maybe calling it a major blow, is over egging it, its certainly a blow though to cycling as a whole in the UK, as Verity seemed to be the only one willing to dream the dream to bring these races to the UK, no-one else is coming up with the stuff to bring the Vuelta or the Giro here for instance.

The Welsh Government are trying to get the Giro.

The Tour de Yorkshire is bigger than its instigator and prime mover.

I suspect, in the grand scheme of things, it's a minor misdemeanour. There will be enough momentum and interest in maintaining and even developing the sport in the Yorkshire cycling fraternity by now that the lack of one (big) personality will cause no more than a brief ripple. And most of it will be on cycling forums or the local chip wrapper.
Aspire not to have more, but to be more.

Hi yes that's in all the accounts of the story, but do you know what it actually means though? Theres no explanation of the link from family tragedy to the admitted expenses irregularities. The inference is that he was distracted, but is that it?

Don't want to be heartless here but it just sounds like PR-advised excuses without any further detail...

Of course they do. I was asking if there was anything more specific known, but clearly not.
