I'm considering pulling the trigger on a 2018 Cervelo R3. Size guide suggests I'm between sizes - 54 and 56.

The shop only has the 56 R3 in stock, but keen to try a 54. Currently trying to find the same model in a 54, within my local area.

I'm 5' 10" with a 32" inside leg.

Any guidance would be hugely appreciated.

    I'm 183cm / 6ft with a 33" inseam. I had a 56 with a 110mm stem. Very comfy bike.

You can fit either, I'd go for the 54 with a longer stem to suit.

After seeing the geometry 54 will be fine for you (with maybe ~12cm stem depending on how long your arms are), what do you ride currently?

The R3 has a much racier geometry than the Cube, you may find the front end of the 54 too low depending on your flexibility.

Take a look at the above site.

Agree, so it depends on your flexibility/goals. Do you have any issues with the Cube? Have you set it up properly?

Thanks for all the helpful replies. Managed to get a test ride on a 54 today...felt like a good fit...what do you think?

  • If you need that many spacers under the stem I’d say that the front end is too low for you . . .

In my opinion it looks like a bit of upright position for a racing bike, so when going hard it could be a bit less comfortable.
If not intending to race maybe the 56 would suit you better? Not sure for how long you've been cycling for or what your goals are but could get the advice of a professional fitter too.

I'd likely take some of the spacers out to drop the front end to make racier.

Looks good ... I have a 56 boardman, had a bike fit recently, advice was yeah the 56 is fine with a smaller stem, I can't run a long stem with it so I have a 95cm stem instead of the stock 110cm that came with the bike. I would need a 54 frame in order to run the longer stem comfortably ... I'm 5.10 (5.11 on a good day, ha!).
  • I’ve just got the new R2 which is same frame different fork and I’m 5ft8/9 and I’m on a 51cm with a 110cm stem.
  • Stack/reach for the 56cm Cube is 385/591 (I'm also 5'10 with ~32" cycling inseam, I ride the 58cm with 388/610).

    54cm R3 stack/reach looks to be 378/555, 56cm is 387/580.

With the 110mm stem at -6 degree, I typically ride with 10mm spacer above the conical spacer on my Cube, there's no way I would be risking the 54cm R3 because of my lower back (even though it has been much happier in the last two years, after nine years of being very troublesome).

Doesn't look to be too much seatpost showing on those pics. It's all down to your personal preference and how aggressive you want your position to be.

Bear in mind if you remove spacers you will increase the effective reach.

I would suggest the 56 would be better based on my experience.

I've got a 54 but I'm only 5'9" with a 33" inseam and I would have thought that with a longer torso you'd want the larger size.

yeah go with the 56, i'm the same measurements as you and my 54 R5 is defo a tiny bit too small, yeah i could put a longer stem and even more seat post exposed but really i should have gone 56.

Mind you the R5 is an insanely good bike and makes climbing much easier even for an old biffa like me
