It appears that he was involved in blood doping with the same doctor as that cross-country skiier that got caught red handed. He's been arrested and confessed everything according to reports. There are blood bags belonging to others.

It was fairly suspicious when he suddenly just quit in December

Yeah, I saw it earlier and certainly is going around, after the inrg tweet.

Which, of course has led to mucho speculation over this:

Edit: Just as I see Iain has just beaten me to it.

Well the police investigation was the result of a tip off. So it seems that this wasn't detected through the passport.

Drug testing is not perfect and never will be. But we don’t disband the police on the basis of one unsolved crime.

no & Im not saying it should or is meant to be the case and we just chuck the baby out with the bath water

Im just trying to understand how someone can blood dope in the modern era of testing at least in cycling terms where we know what we are looking for, I always kind of expected it would be something new to be the next big thing, not back to blood bags and that stuff again, so what gap did they find if the anti doping missed it, did they even miss it ?

nordic skiing I dont know enough about to get a feel for what or how that happened there though those pictures looked like something from the 90s, though interesting listening to the Eurosport commentators discuss it whilst I was waiting for KBK to start and say that the nordic skiing team trainers were all trying to downplay it as a big issue.

but I saw the Telegraph have already made a bigger article on Denifl than the nordic skiers, and you know thats how the popular press will play it again, cyclist got caught doping, not actually out of a bunch of other athletes got raided first, cyclist then confessed to having some involvement with the same thing

Well the idea is that with EPO if you micro-dose (and do it over a long period of time) you can avoid the spikes in parameters which would be noticed in the passport. Basically that is then your "normal" blood profile.

I guess that something similar might be possible with transfusions (although don't know).

There hasn't been anything quite like this for a little while so the case should give some insight into how athletes are doping these days (one of the things Friebe always says on the podcast is that we haven't had any major busts like this for a while so we don't really have a clear picture of people are getting up to).

The best way to avoid detection is to dope to the gills from an early age before going pro and being tested :). Sorted crack on till the day you retire

Now, Groupama FDJ's George Preidler confesses......well, sort of, does a Basso and says he had blood taken but not re-infused.

Still waiting on a translated article.

I filed a doping confession. I had my blood taken but never returned. But only the thought and the fraudulent intention are already a crime.

Rides for a French team too. Who would have thought?
Well, folks do say that their teams are still riding "old school".

And prior to that, for the 'super squeaky clean' Sunweb.

Am I imagining it or did Preidler put in some surprising performances the last couple of years too? I had a look on PCS but can't see anything. Sure I remember a decent segment on the cycling podcast about him from a while back.

To be honest I had to fire up PCS to remind myself who he is. He's not done much really.

I see that according to PCS, he has now been terminated.

Going back to Bob's point, he's not wrong. Preidler did some really strong rides in the Giro mountains, a few years back.
Must have been 2016, going on PCS.
I remember thinking at the time, wtf? as he looked to be a really big guy.
Turns out he is about 6'-4", but weighs about the same as Carlos Betancur's left leg.

very disappointing that he admits the blood was taken over the last few months. So much for the sports murky past, this brings it right up to date and in my mind probably means he's been at it for years.

    Argos Shimano 2013
    Giant Shimano 2014
    Giant Alpecin 2015/16
    Sunweb 2017
    French team 2018

There is another guy who followed the exact same career path and had a stellar TDF while at Sunweb, before getting too big for his boots.
    Done very little since.....

Are they going to release them so we can present wildly inaccurate guesses as facts again?
