  • Well that's Friday afternoon sorted....
  • for a bit of light entertainment heres the first one from 1971 - all wooly jumpers, untidy cabling and 56 tooth chainrings  The good old days of Pot Belge before things got 'all scientific'

  • Unfortunately, the race has lost a bit of it's prestige over the past few years, as races in warmer climates became the norm.
A stage lost this year, due funding cuts, too.

On a side note, Provence is also being shown, next week, by L'Equipe.
They have gone to town, with three and a half hours of live coverage following a pre stage programme.

That will beat the Petanque World Tour they normally have on all day.

  • That site isn't working for me, today, for the first time in a couple of years.
Anyhow, just 40kms to go, here.

  • Huge chute mid-pack.
    Devolder comes off worst.

  • Laporte wins as Direct Energie make a complete horlicks of things.

It's nice that these pre-season friendlies allow the French to win something. It's a bit like those pre-season football tournaments in SE Asia where Spurs can get some silverware.

It's a local race for local people. There's nothing for you here.

It's fair to say that the parcour are a bit underwhelming.
Kind of like an inferior ENECO tour.
3 sprint stages, hardly a climb worth mentioning and an eleven km ITT to round things off.
So, while it may have some appeal to the classics riders, it's basically become a race for French sprinters.
Unfortunately, Bouhanni has joined the GT and GC men in the warmer climes of Valencia, while Demare has opted to start his season in the Algarve.

It's become a shadow of it's former self.

  • I know it's a minnow. But a start!

Won't stop me watching, for sure.
Live coverage put back 30 minutes I see.
Might mean that both races won't finish at the same time today.
Then there's Scotland v Ireland starting...................

Powerful sprint by Marc Sarreau to win ahead of race leader Christophe Lapporte.

Might be a minnow but I'm happy to watch

Laporte takes a 5sec advantage ahead of Bryan Coquard into tomorrow's final stage (TT)

Despite their status these races are those in which teams like Direct Energie, Vital-Concept, etc. need to impress if they want gain a spot in this year's Tdf.

Christophe Laporte (COF) puts in an excellent ride to win the TT and win the overall.

    Final GC
    1 Christophe Laporte (COF)
    2 Tobias Ludvigson (GFC) @ 16s
    3 Jimmy Janssens (COC) @ 29s
    4 Bauke Mollema (TFS) @ 29s
    5 Sep Vanmarcke (EF1) @ 34s
  • Good ride! Laporte moving from Bouhanni's leadout to a coming of age sprinter/rouleur?

His 4th last year In Gent Welegem and nearly top 10 in Milan St Remo looked very promising - then 4 combative stages in the Tour including that second to Demarre that the judges had a good look at...

Jimmy Janssens did well . Conti rider until this year and now in a PCT with Van der Poel and Stijn Devolder

(Interview in ObjectifGard on 7 Feb)

It would be nice to see an acknowledgement from ASO - seems as if the crunch meeting for next year takes place tomorrow.
  • Been a reasonable start to the year for Cofidis with Herrada and Laporte.

    Fingers crossed it carries on.
