Might as well kick it off.

Looks like Dumolin will be riding.

The Sunweb boss was having a bit of a rant the other day about the Tour de France and how it is crap compared to the Giro. I can't find much to disagree with:

Elsewhere, Landa and Valverde for the Movistar at the Giro.

After Landa's great work for SKY in 2017, he was a let down this year. Lets hope he can get in the mix next year and doesn't have to work too much for gramps.
  • Also, Nibali, Lopez, Zakarin
Roglic likely will be at the Giro too.

Interesting - wonder if that will change with the upcoming loss of major sponsor.
Convinced Froome will want his 5th Tour, but wondering if Thomas will decide the Giro is worth a tilt, as he could still be carrying good form, and I gather it has 3 TT stages, not looked into it, but asuming 2 individual and one team?
He was certainly in good TT form come the end of the tour, and looks likely he could have won that stage had he not been told to take it easy and back off a bit.

Maybe they will make Thomas and Bernal joint leaders, and try and placate Bernal with the Vuelta, assuming they rest him for the Tour.

    Interesting year ahead.

Bernal is a little young to win a 3 weeker, no?

I assume they are not necessarily expecting him to win, but it is about learning what it is like to be designated leader in a GT.

I think he has the chops to win though.

Perhaps the perfect *foil for Thomas in that case.

*I appreciate they are currently on Pinarellos.

He'd certainly be one of the youngest (possibly in the top 6 youngest for the Giro and maybe 2nd or 3rd youngest for the Tour), but as they say, he showed maturity beyond his years last year (when he was a year younger!!!!).

Im wondering what olive oil Valverde (one of my faves) uses because he's starting to seriously defy aging now

Ahead of the rider who has finished 2nd and 1st in the last two editions?

Not above Dumoulin. Agree on that. I'd probably still pick Roglic over him though.

  • This is a first.
Jumbo-Visma have already announced their Giro team line up.

Yeah - there’s something special about Roglic. Something a bit outlier, like Froome. It might amount to nothing - but 2019 is the year where he either wins big or does a ravine job.
Whatever the grumbles of this year’s pro scene are, they’re clearly getting something right: we’re already salivating over the GTs!

He rode the tour last year with no (declared) ambitions, and he followed the Yates template and attacked when he felt good, followed when he didn't, and he was rewarded with a great position. What is the chance this year of him following that strategy rather than the established "must not have a bad day" mentality?
