    I did this for years.

It did not work in my favour.

48x16 is perfect for a flat commute.

46x16 if you have some small hills.

Obviously 48x16 is not appropriate if you're fixie, but i'm not.

Proper mudguards, decent lights, selection of kit to suit the weather. Fully charged mobile phone just in case...
  • Rapha Reflective rucksack and Giro Republic LX reflective shoes are my fave pieces of commuter kit.

Rapha rucksack holds 32L and is reflective all over.

Giro Republics LX are also reflective all over, look like casual shoes and can be walked in as they are SPDs.

I also have the Giro republic LX shoes, have done 12,000kms in them so far in all weathers and they are still like new. Really impressed with them.

I carry the same stuff I carry commuting or not, the only things I carry extra commuting is a change of clothes including another pair of shoes, a bike lock, and lights if I know I'll be out after dark.

My bike is in a bike parking area watched by video monitoring so all I use is a cable lock, nothing special. Lights I use a Philips Saferide for the front, if I know I'll be taking a long way home in the dark I'll add my Cygolite MityCross 450 OSP (I think I got those initials right!) to my helmet; then on the rear I have a Light & Motion Vis 180 and a Planet Bike Superflash which needs to be replaced. Everything else like pump, tools, flat repair stuff etc I always carry with me whether commuting, touring or just riding.
