I'm looking to extend my cycling season and in doing so will be changing my hand built wheels for my previous ones. What is the best way to store the wheels over winter?
Thanks for the replies, I still have the boxes the new wheels came in, I just wondered if there was a way to hang them on the wall or if the box is the best place, they will still have the cassette and tyres on.
Anywhere really. My summer wheels stay on the summer bike in the garage, just behind the winter bike. So if I get a cold but dry day I can take out the summer bike in winter.
Just try not to put them into storage if there's any water in the rims / hubs...
just anywhere they won't get driven over, otherwise crushed or stolen really. i hang some up in the garage like others have said, others are in the loft.

What’s with these questions on here at the moment!?
I just got out the shower, what should I do with my wet towel?
TBH I thought it was a sensible question, but obviously I was wrong.
I was hoping to find out things like:
Don’t hang them by the rims
Use a box if you have one
Remove skewers and suspend that way
Stored them horizontally or vertically
As to your dilemma I suggest you log onto mumsnet!!!!
They'll be fine if stored sensibly out of the way of dogs, children and other assorted censored . A suitable hanging arrangement (as suggested above) is just that.
They do not need any special treatment. Just keep them with the rest of your bikes. As long as its warm, dry, and kid free anywhere inside your house will do.

but why? they are bicycle wheels. Wheels for a bicycle. Why, in any shape or form, would you have to store them in any weird way?

I store them from the rafters in the garage using plastic-coated "J" hooks. Never had a problem with them being stored that way.

If wheels are going to be stored for some while with tyres on them, the tyres will lose pressure so they shouldn't be stored resting on the tyres...hence hang them up.

Really? An unweighted lightweight wheel is going to deform a tyre? Come on..

EDIT Gahh, not water, they will get wet. What am I thinking? Put them in a sealed bag filled with xenon first.

Because she may be less than attentive to her household chores.
Meanwhile he doesn’t know about the posh handbags and shoes in her wardrobe ...
