Fitting compact instead of triple

My old Sirrus' middle and outer chainrings are dead, worn, kaput. Can't seem to find reasonably priced replacements, but do have a nearly new Tiagra 9 speed compact I could use.

Would the front shifter work, assuming I set the limiter screws correctly? Obviously yhe shifter is for a triple, so would have a redundant"click".

It's just a hill. Get over it.

Yes would work fine, you may be able to get away with setting the limit for the upper ring so your shifter can only click up to that point. The spacing between the rings on the cranksets should be pretty much the same.

A redundant click is all but unnoticable. I've got a Tiagra triple shifter on a double chainset, I don't even think about it.

Edit - The chain ring gap must be the same so you'll find yourself shifting in positions 1-2 or 2-3, not 1-3 with a click in the middle.
