I have changed my rear mech from a short cage to long cage mech both ultegra 6800 I have spent hours currently a 11-28 Cassette It went only up to about 4 cog so I shortened the outer cable and with lots of fiddling it will go into top cog with lots of grinding even with the adjuster on mech wound out fully . I can’t work it out I haven’t tried using the h or low screws . I’m thinking chain ? I put the longer cable back on .
P.s reason for change I want to put on a 11-32 Cassette

    Adjusted the B screw?

Yep wound it in about 90% made no difference?? So put it back where it was

Yep inner is Now knackered but used it for testing . I didn’t think the screws would need adjusting
  • So is that outer cable too long ? I will need to replace the inner , plus is it the low or high to adjust largest cog ? Wind in ?

    well here we go.

The chain is in small small in that picture. There is quite a lot of tension in the Derailleur. The chain is too short to work properly and needs to be replaced. This is normal since it needs to travel a lot further.

    Replace the chain

    re index the RD

    Adjust limit screws (if necessary)

op, why don't you simply set it up the way shimano says to set it up?

    ciao!

you'll need to pop a new inner in so its all smooth and works proper. you can't set anything up with a knackered cable.

    adjust l and h screws

get all working THEN trim down cable

any more probs pop back on here and we'll have a look.

Why would you think that the limit screws on a new derailleur would magically be spot on for your particular bike?

Without settling these correctly no amount of fiddling with the cable tension will correct the shifting.

    RTFM!
FFS! Harden up and grow a pair :D

Make sure you have clicked the shifter all the way into the 'small cog' position.

Surely you would google something like this before attempting it? It baffles me that people would try and install a new mech without a cursory glance online to see if there was anything you needed to do that you weren't aware of.
  • Soz forgot to say it’s a second hand not new mech . Normally others I used didn’t need the adjuster screws tweaking !

    ATT : OP :)

Please remove the cable, reinstall and start from scratch following the dealer manual instructions.

You tube and Park tool do a very clear instruction video on how to complete this basic task which is easier to understand than the manual. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UkZxPIZ1ngY

you may find you need a new chain or possibly add a couple of links if A you have them and B the chain is newish.

failing that, if youre a member of a club ask someone, its the sort of task that most people can do perfectly well.

If all that fails its the LBS and all the cost that that entails for you.

I'm not sure why OP thinks SC to LC is an upgrade when keeping the same Chainrings/Cassette either?
