Hi there,

Looking for my youngest sons first geared bike. Currently has an islabike 14", single speed. I was planning on buying an islabike 20", however I came across the Hoy Bonaly in my lunchtime web browse, and it caught my attention.

7.57kg for a 20" bike seems fantastic. Lighter than the equivalently sized frog and islabikes.

Any experiences would be gratefully received.

Thanks!

There you go. A bit heavier but very very good. We got that in preference to the Hoy because of that awkward trigger shifter.

And the Hoy 24 (which has proper shifters)

  • Hi guys,

    Cheers for the replies.

My sons inside leg is only 45cm, so even the frog 52 is too big for him. He’s only 4.

I have a cube kid 200 in the garage (that my eldest has just grown out of), that he can ride, but not stop as his feet don’t touch the ground. This one weighs just under 10kg, and it feels too big and bulky for him. Hence the islabikes preference, as they do a small framed 20”, and it’s nice and light.

Looking at the Bonaly geometry, it looks to be smaller than the frog 52, so I had assumed it might be similarly sized to the islabikes beinn 20 Small.

You’ve raised a good point about the gearing, and shifters though.

    Cheers,

  • My son is 6 and the Vitus 20 is perfect. He's fairly big. At 4 it would have been way too big.

The 16 is a nice bike but, naturally, no gears.

Yeah, my son had the 20" cube kid at age 6 (Similar size and geometry to the Vitus, although the Vitus looks like much better value tbh), and it served him right up to his 8th Birthday. He how has a Frog mtb 62.

With my youngest We recently did a 9 mile loop at the forest of dean, and on the flat and slight downhills, he's pedalling away like crazy! I just think some gears would help him a lot. Maybe he's too young tho.

I guess, I'll try him on an isla 20" small. I live fairly close to their showroom anyway (less than an hour away).

The 2019 Hoy isnt out till october anyway. That said, this purchase is for his 5th Birthday, which is in November.

    Cheers,

    Chris
