Free hub service shimano 6800

Hello, I'm having a bit of bother servicing my freehub. I get to a certain point and I assume the axle should just slide out, but it doesn't. I've attached a couple of photos. Any advice would be much appreciated.

    Great, thanks for that. Cleaned it up and re greased the bearings. I don't have the tool to get the freehub off and there's still a rumbling noise. I guess I'll need a new freehub?

    I don't understand how it would be the freewheel if the rumbling noise occurs when freewheeling. Seems ok when pedaling.

    maybe its the hub bearings? can you remove clean and reassemble / grease?

    does it just need adjusting?

    That's the only situation in which the freehub is doing it's thing; the outer bit is stationary while the inner bit attached to the hub is rotating. So if it's rumbling then but not when pedalling it suggests the freehub internals are to blame.

    Quickest way to check is to fit a new freehub. 14mm hex and a long lever.

    On my 10 year old RS10s I take the freehub off annually, pick the seal out from the back and drizzle some oil in there. Not sure if the 6800 freehub allows that; some have the seal glued in.

    Oh, and if you do simply buy a replacement 6800 freehub, make sure it comes with the requisite fixing bolt; they are not meant to be reusable according to Shimano.

    To be fair, most illustrations of the item online do show the bolt, often inside the freehub and the wrong way round...
