Peugeot with Maillard Freewheel advice please

Hi,

Please can I have some advice. I'm using an old Peugeot Racer for my short commute to work. The back wheel is beyond repair and needs replacing. Do I need to remove the old 5 speed Maillard cassette from the old wheel to put on the new wheel or can I simply buy a new wheel and 5 speed freewheel and use that.

I'm hoping I can because the Maillard needs a 24 spline tool to remove it which I don't have.

    Yep, just chuck the old wheel in the recycling skip and buy another 126 spaced wheel + freewheel.

    The one in your link looks fine as a like for like replacement, or if you're using friction shifters you could look for a 6 or 7 speed freewheel for an extra sprocket or two. Probably dearer though

    i have the tool in my shop. VAR make them and any good shop should have one.

    In the absence of the tool, a standard ol' pair of Channelocks will suffice. Generally the lock nut is not torqued very tightly. Just be careful not to crush, or distort the thin, aluminum lock nut. They're available but cost about $20 US.
    Just for the record, my only ride is an '84 Peugeot PH10 bought new. It still has the Helicomatic rear end and looks and runs as good as the day it was new. I guess maybe I'm just lucky.
