Car making rattling noise

Right, car afficionados, here is one for you.

MF was getting the serious power down in his Honda Accord earlier (he thinks its 10 years old, 50,000 miles, always fully serviced) and its started making a rattling noise from what seems the back end.

Its not graunching or rubbing like its pads down to metal sort of thing, no funny stuff with handling, but intermittent rattling like you're shaking a tin can full of bits of metal, so he's guessing exhaust/catalyser. Came on suddenly.

Doesn't happen all the time, still revs through and sits on the limiter when he's getting serious power down, VTEC (no, not that VTEC) works fine.

He reckons that if it is the catalyser he'll live with it by just turning the stereo up when he's playing his banging tunes. or just get an aftermarket silencer and throw the broken exhaust and catalyser into next door's garden after smashing it with a hammer and setting fire to it with fire.

Waddya say?

    No, I don't, MF does.

Its the dog/bike/bambini/dump runner/shopping car. All the stuff he doesn't want to do in the AMG.

He's just taken it for a hack and the rattling has stopped and it doesn't seem to be handling too bad (for an Accord). Still sitting at 70 on the limiter in second so that was a worthwhile and very adult/mature test of whether his car was broken. Not sure what it was meant to prove though.

Its also sitting all square as well - no sagging on any corner, but would it sag if the strut was broken?

    Broken exhaust bracket?

My skills are limited to unplugging cables and plugging them back in, or turning the ignition off then on again.

No idea but the sound you describe sounds a bit like when my strut went the other week.

I’d go for the exhaust or heat shield option first.

Thank you but too tinny rattly rather than loose parts rattle.

MF had a few stuck under there before and always found they whine rather than rattle.

The car also doesn't smell of effluent so discounting Brexiteers option.

    Thank you anyway.

Is it expensive to fix? Can he still pull wheelspins and handbrake turns in safety?

Hope it's not that. He'll never stop going on about it.

Thought they were spineless little isolationist weevils. Maybe is a carapace rather than bones making the noise?

Set in on fire with fire, smash it to bits with a pick elf (whatever the flip one of those is  ) and throw into the neighbours garden. Job jobbed.
Or it’s probably a small hole in the exhaust and don’t worry about it, chap. It’s a Honda and must be thrashed within an inch of its life.
    Pour glass of wine, and....relax.

About 150 quid but they also found 3 broken springs to go with it. So it was suddenly 800 f*cking quid.

Very good points very well presented. Merci beaucoup. MF will probably wait until a bank holiday to do that as the extra day of waiting for someone to clear up the mess will prove brilliantly inconvenient.

I must admit for a Honda estate when you are using the flappy paddle mode and just flooring it everywhere it is quite good fun in a barge like way. Catcxhes out the boy racers when this barge comes flying past them at a million revs.

MF was saying that in the 40,000 miles he's had it this is the first glitch so overall he doesn't mind too much.

Still, fire it is. And a pick elf. A large one.

    150: huzzah!

    800: bugger.

If its that best get a trailer for the Merc.

On a less serious note; run it to the ground and don't bother trying to get it through an MOT and there will be no rattles when it's 1 cubic metre after going through the machine...

On a serious note, if I have a rattle and given that my trolley jack limits what I can do, I take my car to my local ATS. They are excellent at isolating rattles.

She appreciates SG’s hatred of brexiteers and does realise MF holds them in similar disdain.
