hanger extender -will I need longer gear cable?

Looking to replace 11-34 cassette by 11-40 and reckon I will need a rear mech hanger to clear the cassette. Obviously this moves the mech down

Has anyone done this, if so, was the gear cable too short?

It is SRAM X0 using a full length gear cable outer and it looks like I may get away with moving the cable tie holding it to the chainstay, assuming the new angle of entry does not affect shifting.

    It depends how much 'free' cable you have. If there is a big loop of cable at the handlebars you shouldn't have a problem moving it a few centimetres.

    Cassette and extender fitted after some fettling.

    Since I'm going from 44-34 to 32-40 (biggest-biggest), a difference of 6, then I will need to shorten the chain by 6 links, correct?

    Had an old chain to try out and it seems removing 4 links is about right, two less than I thought.

    Makes sense as the hanger extender will use up some chain.

    No it doesn’t make any sense at all.

    Erm that would be three links of course........
    Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.
