Can someone tell me Black Mirror gets better please?

Tried the first episode (Series 1) and couldn't help but feeling it was 45mins of my life I won't be getting back, despite being a big Charlie Brooker fan.

Detectorists is amazing. I can't quite put my finger on it - it's not hilarious - but it's so worth watching.
I watched the last episode again a week later and it is so rewarding. Lots happening in the background.
Really leaves you happy. You don't get that from Black Mirror or the News....

Spiral is on BBC4\iplayer at the mo, and McMafia is bloody good, currently on BBC1\iplayer.

I'm just reading the book of the same name (being serialised in the Times mag at the mo') - bewildering how the world of organised crime and is all linked.

Worth a read if you get a chance.

Thanks MF - will put that on the list.

The Detectorists is\was one of the best things on television without a doubt - all done and dusted now though sadly, but then at least they managed it without one dud episode - perhaps it will come back in a good few years.

On the comedy front, I was a big fan of W1A as well - which has also finished.

Compared with the likes of 'Mrs Browns Boys' either of the above are poles apart - I can't understand the attraction of alleged comedy shoes like that personally, but am sure they have huge viewing figures so am in the minority.

Also liked the reboot of X-Files last year, and am looking forward to the next series which is due any time soon I think.

The Christmas special (John Hamm, Rafe Spall) literally gave me nightmares.
I've not seen any since it left the BBC.

When he was going to house auction and his girlfriend asked if he had any experience of this, his reply..
" I don't wish to brag dear, but while you've been at work for the last 5 years, I've seen every episode of Homes under the hammer".. well tickled me

Also another vote for Spiral, only just started watching at series 6, but excellent viewing

    Spiral (again)

The breadth, depth and detail of the characters and their interwoven stories is captivating.

BBC4 Saturday evenings. They are most of the way through this series, but I'm sure you can catch up somewhere.

You can binge watch the whole of series 6 on iplayer.

Indeed, all available on there, they are showing the episodes in pairs on BBC4, so are already up to episode 10 I think, and only one Saturday left - not sure how long they then remain available on iplayer after that.

Also - this Sunday @ 8 or 9pm, on ITV, Endeavour starts again! Top quality writing and acting.

Should I find series 1 somewhere or start with a later series?

You probably should start with series 1, maybe others can advise, but this is the first series I have watched, so expect i am missing some back stories, but has not obviously inhibited my enjoyment of it.
I have series 1-3 on DVD, but yet to watch it!
May watch them whilst on the turbo this year - subtitles at the bottom means I have to run TR up at the top though!

What is the forum view on McMafia?

I'm currently thinking it's worth about 6 out of 10 but we'll see what the climax brings. There have been some tense moment but overall it has been a bit slow.

The guy playing the main character (tipped as the next Bond) has been a bit wooden IMO, and none of the other characters are particularly likeable.

I've thoroughly enjoyed it myself, I'd give it an 8 out of 10 - agreed it is a bit of a slow burner, but I quite like the way it's not too fast paced, and the way I feel like I am getting a good impression of the various locations they use.
They'll tip anyone who is seen in a Casino wearing a tucks these days - think Hiddlestone has more of a shout than this guy, but it's going to be 3 years or more until the next bond is required.
I'm one episode behind at the moment I think.

Main actor chap seems ok, nothing phenomenal imho, but perfectly decent as an actor - never seen any of his other stuff.

I think it's getting more gripping lately.

Alex (the main guy) is very blank - I guess that's the character. The actor can act so it must just be what they wanted from him - not emotional. I agree most of the characters aren't easy to warm too. I do like Joseph the bodyguard and the Russian 'hostage' girl - lets hope they get a good outcome.

Ah good call, I thought the word was that his association with her has put him out of the running - although 5 years after the fact all things may be forgiven.

I'm ambivolent about whether he is given the gig tbh, I think he would do a decent job, but would need to come across as less polished then he did in the night manager - Hugh Laurie was superb in that.

He is fine in a smug comedic roll but his strutting, supposedly hard man performance in the night manager was laughable. I think Hollywood have cottoned on to the fact he's not leading man material so we need not worry.

Just watched episode 6 over lunch - most dramatic one for me by some way, thought the acting was excellent personally, and like that the bodyguard has migrated across to London.
Also take the fact that they must have asked the lead to play his character in such a way, and to that end I think he is doing a fine job - I'm glued!
Only 2 episodes left, and definitely feels like it is building to a crescendo.

Anyone's watched the channel 4 prog on the Biggest Little Railway?

Trying to run a model steam train down the length of the Great Glen in Scotland. 70 miles of track. It's nice to see how much effort people put into these things.

Yeh really good watch, have a couple of weeks recorded ready to go. The kind of thing James May would also have been good at presenting\working on.

  • The Expanse - series 2 better than series 1, but overall just brilliant
Van Helsing - a bit 'American Cheesy' in places, but not bad, plenty of top-drawer gore
Star Trek: Discovery - getting better with every plot twist
Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency - out there where the buses don't run, like a televisual acid trip
The Punisher - followed on from the tail end of Daredevil, pretty brutal in places
The End of the F*cking World - weird, just weird. But great
The Man in the High Castle
Westworld - new series out soon :)
