Pinarello Project

Hi all,

New to the forum, I have inherited a 2009? Pinarello Prince Carbon Frame.

I plan to build a custom bike.

Now, I have been looking at groupsets, mainly Campagnolo, are all types of groupsets compatible with the frame? or do I need to purchase a specific set? I was looking at the Chorus or Athena sets.

Thanks in advance.

  • Anyone?

Apologies if it sounds like a n00b question, but everyone has to start somewhere.
  • The only real variable you'll have is the bottom bracket, as long as that is available in the type you need you can go on from there. I've had bikes with Athena, Chorus and Record, if it was mine I think I'd go for Chorus mechanical. Good luck with the project and don't forget the pictures!

Yup - double check the bottom bracket type and get the matching crank for the bottom bracket but otherwise everything mechanical will fit. Same vote here for Chorus mechanical.

  • Really appreciate the replies fellas.

I have thought about buying each individual item separately, so I quickly googled athena vs chorus and a few people have said, get chorus shifters and mechs and then athena brakes - what is your opinion on this?

No harm at all in buying each bit separately - spreads the cost and means that you can pick up bits in clearances/ex display for dirt cheap.

If you're going for Athena brakes just make sure the pull ratios work - I must admit that Imwould either look for Record in the sales or go Chorus to match all. Why go for Jo Brand when you can go for Jo Guest?

I see where you're coming from, so I will keep an eye out.

Are there any components you would risk buying second hand, and some of them you would avoid?

    Thanks

So long as they aren't knackered I'd buy anything second hand if the price/condition was right.

I'd avoid cassettes, chains, chainrings and brake pads though. Maybe ignore bb and headset bearings unless they are very low mileage.

No point buying a lot of this stuff second hand though - search around and you'll get bargains - for example, chainsets:

    https://www.merlincycles.com/fulcrum-r- ... 46301.html

£279 saving for something that is, I believe, made by Campagnolo anyway. I have two of these and they are lovely - really stiff, light, look good.

    You can't buy a chainring for £99 today......l

Record chain is what, £25 and then wait for the January sales?

Booom. £300 saving on SR 11.

Or use Italian ultra tourque bb as above with Fulcrum cranks as above.

Skeleton brakes are a lot cheaper than Chorus and I can't really see the difference save for 12g in weight.

I have some and fine them to work just as good as Ultegra/DA.

    Thanks

I bought a whole SRAM Red groupset (in instalments) second hand. No problem.

I'm looking forward to seeing this built up. The Prince is a wonderful frameset.

If you know the provenance of the stuff then no problem to do as Ben says but there are enough threads right across the tinternet asking how to repair shifters that I personally couldn't be bothered doing it (cue irate Ugo explosion).

By the time you've bought the 2nd hand shifter and new cables, wasted time fitting it to find out its broken, taken it off, scratched head, posted, tinkered, ordered new parts, tinkered, posted, tinkered, fitted again new cables to replace the new ones that got bigger red taking the broken shifter apart, etc, You may as well spend the extra in the clearance/sales and buy new.

  • Thanks for the responses fellas,

I have got some Skeleton brakes on order new for xmas from my bro, I've also got my eye on a chorus crank.

I see where you're coming from regarding cassette, I will definitely look out for them in the sales.

I'll get some pictures tonight, I knew it would be light but couldn't believe how light it was !

    Thanks again,

No worries - pleasure to help.

Re cassette - Record is ridiculously expensive but you could drop down a couple of rungs to whatever is below Chorus nowadays but still run a Record chain as they are so cheap. Only penalty will be 50g or so that you can get back easily (set of Planet X ti/carbon skewers at £20 odd will get the weight back, work really well and look pukka).

    Looking forward to pictures.

Get some nice deep rims and tubs on it, slam da stem, be lovely.

  • Thanks for that, I'm not really after the lightest bike ever, it's only a coincidence that I've inherited a carbon bike.

I would like to know which are the best wheels to get?

    Thanks

Nooooooo! Don't start that debate! :)

What are you going to do with the bike - just ride and be cool, sportives, race? Budget?

Few threads in the buying advice section have discussed this but something as sweet as a Prince I would only put deep rim carbons on it with tubs (cue shouty posts saying that I'm wrong)..........

Remember when you start looking around you'll need either a Campag hub or a Shimano/SRAM hub Campag spaced cassette (which isn't a major problem - £30 or so from Miche through Merlin Cycles or similar. I have one on Dirk and it works perfect.

Brakes are just levers. No need to overthink them. They'll work.

Just casual rides and the occasional Sportive really. Crikey those wheels look good and are pricey !!

In that case, deep rim 50 or 60s: Planet X, Hunt, Carbonzone, etc. Pick them up for about £400.

Just make it as cool as phuck and stuff practicality and dullards who say nay.

  • Okay great I’ll look into those wheels aswell, noticed lots of Fulcrums - what are they like?

Also will get some pictures when I’m on a computer

fulcrums are fine - standard factory built wheels - no better or worse than equivalents from manufacturers like Mavic, etc.

quality of components/lightness/etc gets better as you go up the range but thats par for the course.

    Cannot access album.

You need to log in, go to the picture and off hand there is a drop down box that will give you some options about posting the picture somewhere - copy and paste the little drop down link here.
