A while ago American Classic was making cassette clips like this:

It seems they don't make them anymore.
Have you ever seen anyone else do this? Where?

Thanks!

Out of curiosity I spent a while Googling every possible description I could come up with, but to no avail.

Pity; seemed like a good idea for people running alu freehubs with shallow splines.

Looks like the kind of thing that somebody could knock up in the shed with a fly-press. My step father-in law has an Aladdin's cave of metalworking stuff; maybe I'll go into business...
  • @keef66 : totally! That won't make you a millionaire but I'm sure you can sell many of these if you can put them on Amazon, even if the price is a little high for some pieces of metal, like $19.99. Just make sure it's on Amazon.com for shipping in the US.
It has to be quite precise though, the fit is tight.
Please let us know if you ever do it!

As a lifetime user of Shimano sprockets on Shimano steel freehubs I may have to do a bit of market research...

Are these only of use to people with Shimano 10 speed cassettes on certain American Classic freehubs?
Or are there several kinds of alloy freehub that have the requisite space to install some kind of aftermarket bite prevention thing?

Obviously there'd be no room for them if the splines of an alloy freehub perfectly matched those on the sprockets.
  • @keef66 : in theory 10 speed and 11 speed are strictly the same thing except that 11sp is 1.8mm longer (wider if you look at the bike from behind). Then of course the spacing between the rings is a bit closer on 11sp too, but it's irrelevant concerning cassette clips.
I think it should be of use for anyone with aluminum freehub bodies, and especially expensive ones like Zipp, and especially if they are no longer made because then these folks have no other choice.
I think it should fit in 2 places in the cassette, I will confirm that tomorrow because I need to put a new cassette (a modified 11sp on a 10sp hub, this way: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cazQt5oleo4 ) so I will look closely to where there would be room for clips. Well, I'll take good photos as well.
  • So, I took some photos.
This is a Shimano caseette 10 speed in a Zipp Sub9. But 10 or 11 speed son't make any difference in the pattern.

Now, this is what comes after the first 3 rings. For the 3 first rings there is no room at all for anything under. But from the 4th one to the biggest one there's certainly some room as you can see. It will have to be measure correctly because it's very precise. Plus if you don't make good contact with both the hub and the rings that clip will be useless.
I believe that considering the small difference between 10 and 11 speed one size should fit both. In length, the clips could start right where the biggest ring starts, and end somewhere between the 3rd and 4th smaller rings, making it compatible with both 10 and 11 speeds.

Please let me know if you ever do it!
    Thanks.

Thanks for taking the time to do the photos. Certainly looks like something could be made to fit in there. It's the kind of thing I'd have a go at when I retire, and when I get hold of the equipment, both of which could be any time in the next 3 years. I'll be sure to let you know.
