Hey guys, i’m currently using a 1x8 drive train on my road/fitness bike. The chainring is a 38 Tooth which i think is a little small. Will upgrading it to a 50 Tooth one make a difference? Thanks

no not at all ..... infact I wonder why they bother making 50t chain rings .. when they can just make 38t ones :?

of course it will make a difference .... look at any 2x bike, they have a 34/36/38 small ring and a 48/50/52/53 etc etc big ring .... this allows a small ring for an easier range and a big ring for a harder range.

you changing to a 50t will make going uphill harder and down hill faster before you spin out

    Ignore the condescension above.

Yup - it'll make quite a big difference: be much faster on the flat and downhill but harder uphill but nothing major really. Make it all really nice and zippy.

    What ya ridin'?

    I thought so.

Could be a tad tight coming up some of those hills but you'd get used to it. Tad more hard work for the first couple of weeks but would then be really cool.

How come you're thinking of the gearing and handlebars change?

  • wanted to achieve a higher top speed because now my highest is about 35-40/h. Just wanted to see if a bigger chainring would increase it. I’ve tried drop bars before on my friend’s bicycle and the experience was great so why not have it.

You'll achieve a greater top speed no dramas with the bigger chainring so go for it. Bear in mind that you may have to get a longer chain but just a few dollars and a couple of minutes to fit.

Same for drop bars - just do it and see how it goes.
