So long story short, my bikes got nicked and now I have £2000 insurance payout burning a hole in my pocket. I'm looking for one bike to cover as wide a range of "trail" riding as possible - Most of the time I ride local XC stuff and trail centres (Afan, Cwmcarn) up to red level Downhills at BPW.

I don't want anything that's going to be "too much bike" for the gentler, more pedally stuff, so would prefer to either go with a Do-it-all hardtail or a 120mm travel FS (maybe with a bit more up front). 650b wheels either way - would consider plus-size for the hardtail option.

Problem is, I'm a bit out-of-touch at the moment, so not sure where to start... Any suggestions?
