Yo have a rang of options, the downtube 'crud catcher', a large 'motocross' style mudguard on the forks or small one that attaches to the fork crown, the last is my preference, it's small and light, doesn't look wrong but actually does a pretty good job, of course you still get wet and muddy though!

  • ok thank you
  • what would you recommend for the back then and isit best to install the front mudguard onto the forks themselves

    Front https://www.decathlon.co.uk/flash-mtb-f ... 27776.html
    Rear https://muckynutz.com/butt_fender_black

Muckynutz also did a similar front, decathlon used to do a rear but it's not showing on the website.

Anything bigger doesn't keep you much cleaner but looks shite and will attract a lot of mud and get heavy.

Beavertail also look decent on the current black Vulcan
  • Beaver tails are pretty good, I like mine as they have really good coverage.
I had to buy a new screw /bolt as the supplied one for the front fork was too long but whatever, it was about 50p from local hardware shop.
My mate constantly takes the mick, but i don't care.

These are beaver tail xl on 26inch wheels for size comparison.
I can't say i've really had any issues with them getting clogged up with mud.

I didn't get on with the Decathlon one, found with the single loop at the top it pulled that up but allowed the sides to sit proud of the bar over the wheel. Not helped in my case by running Chunky Monkey tyres so they were a bit wider than normal on my Recon fork.

The Muckynutz front design (which I've got on another bike in the house) has the loops for the cable ties at the side which makes sure clearance is wider overall.

I think they are a good product though, especially effective at keeping too much crap off the stantions.

  • They sit high away from the wheel, so look daft and won't provide great frame or fork protection.

If you're going to get mudguards, either go all the way and get a beaver tail set, or if you want to keep it minimal, get the little one's that zip tie on.

Erm, the race blade are for a road bike!

The bearvertail work OK, but I wouldn't use them for proper off roading, just road and light gravel trails.
