Surprised it doesn't have its own thread.

Did a Majorca ride for first time yesterday. Found it excellent. No buffering, provided you keep within 08x-1.2x the recorded video speed (there's an indicator in your speed box) it really does look realistic and excellent.

Climbing etc easily as good as the others and, imo, the flywheel effect using the Neo was much better so you come to a gradual rather than shuddering halt up hills if you don't pedal.

  • Telegraphe today. Really good fun. Can't see me going back to Zwift tbh.

  • I've been having a gander on their website:

    http://www.fulgaz.com

The routes look really good and there seems to be a huge range of varying terrain to virtually ride. From the info on there it looks t obe a very well executed concept. It's a shame you can only use it on an iPhone/iPad device at present as I'd love to try this out on my gaming laptop that I use for Zwift rather than download it to my teeny iPhone screen. I'm a Zwift junkie, but I may give FulGaz a go this weekend if I have enough storage space left on my iPhone.

As it's real video that you just watch over and over, I take it there's no virtual racing or group rides or chasing other riders around the courses? Just you riding your chosen course at a virtual speed relative to your wattage?

I was watching one of the demo videos and thinking, no matter how hard I pedal I'll never catch that dude in front of me or that rider is always going to come past me at that point in the video!

    What's the cost?
And do you pay per video or is it unlimited access ?

You may want to look at http://bigringvr.com/
This is currently free and runs on PCs. Lots of rides and more being added all the time. You can also choose to ride against other riders. A little different in the way they have been filmed, from a vehicle not a bike like FulGaz but good quality video. Automatic upload to Strava if you want it to. The guys running it are very helpful

That was my problem with it - even though I was actually riding very slowly up Ventoux, I think it was, I was still breezing past loads of other cyclists - which clearly affects the realism aspect.

Should give it another go though - do they have any flattish rides, if you just want a spinney session, or rolling terrain?

No apple devices in my household though, and never will be, so Fulgaz not an option.

This has been raised with them and they've recently added some flatter rolling rides. Have a look on their website in the "Rides" section... you can search and organise by difficulty etc.

Awesome, thankyou Dabber - I like climbs, but sometimes if you just have an easy workout to complete, it might be nice to have some nice scenery and a not too taxing route to complete, by the coast or something.

I think I have rebuilt my laptop since i tried it in the summer, so will get it re-installed, could be a good replacement for when there is just a basic recovery ride on Trainerroad, and to have some (hopefully) sunshine in my cold dark garage.

  • Overtaking is certainly an issue. From my experience so far the rider who records the ride is generally 'average,' but slightly better than me. So, for example, his paced ride up the Telegraphe was a ride of about 1hr 8m as I recall where I took 1hr 15. That means that the video is generally running at around 0.9 ish x and that looks very real. He overtakes quite a few cyclists on the Telegraphe and Ventoux so he's pretty good or, at least, pretty good at holding a good do-able average.

There are races, but, as stated, nothing like Zwift because, being video, you can't move up places.

For me I prefer Fulgaz because the main part of cycling that I enjoy is cycling through scenery. Races are all very lovely, and as far as training is concerned, useful. But I just like being on the bike and Fulgaz is quite a pleasant experience. I need to try BigRing but I'm doing Fulgaz on the iPad and BigRing will need the Mac, which is pretty hard to drag to the garage.

Dan, yes, there are a load of flatter ones now. I do the same, use them for recovery rides, so, for example, if I do an Alp or Telegraphe, I might do 30 minutes of a flat ride to warm down.

  • Incidentally, I also tried Bkool. That also has live rides (video) but also Zwift type graphics. Nice mix.

But, couldn't use it as though the ipad and it picked up the BLE of my Neo, it wouldn't use it as a trainer, only power. Common issue and apparently you need to connect using ANT+, but all the other programmes allow me to just use BLE

Thanks BTR - will get this set up soon, or thi weekend actually, as next week is kind of a rest week of sorts, before I get back into sweet spot base training, so seems like a good opportunity to give it a go.

I have a feeling if they filmed the video from an actual bike, it would seem a lot more realistic - imho.

Yeah I'm thinking it'd be good for this type of thing as a change from Zwift. Pick a nice scenic route somewhere to knock out a low intensity recovery spin on the turbo with some new sights. Or if you are actually training for one of the rides they have uploaded, a good way of getting to know the course, if only virtually!

If you want video and ride against other users then BKool simulator should provide somethign suitable - not seen how they put other riders on the video - but on the simulator they're there, so I'd think similar on the video. You can put your own video up too ...

I did a Shoreham to Worthing ride months ago - the wierd part was coming out of T junctions at 18+mph without looking ...

  • IPad Air 2. It’s about 20 metres from the WiFi, in the garage, 2 bars but still runs fine.

My first fulgaz ride today. Tacx flux to ipad mini mounted on my bars. Worked brilliantly. Well impressed and will probably subscibe when my trial finishes. Cheers for the heads up!
  • I did some of the Flanders on Friday. Lovely with some brutal climbs. Muur de Geraardsbergen!

can the rides be added to strava with all the 'gps' type data ala zwift or do you have to add as a trainer ride/private and it show's no mat /elevation etc?

    yes !

I tried this at the weekend ... love it ! ..... did a Triathlon ride, with a section on an airfield and then some very short but steeeeeeeep hills ... good loops

and follwed up with the Brompton World Champs in London

It saves it to Strava just the same as Zwift

Seriously love it though ... so much better than BigRingVr .... will definately be using this in addition to Zwift !

worked a treat, thanks, noticed there are no flybys, but that makes sense, picking up the new flux all being well this week so be on there soon!

  • I can't recall but I may have had flyby's on the Telegraphe last week. Yep, checked, there was one.

And, on the Flanders ride, I had about 6 other people doing it. For real in the real world!

I don't think that should be happening if your ride is tagged as a "Virtual Ride" on Strava.
