The C40 conundrum...

Do I finally go and get it re-sprayed and restore it to it's former glory? There's also a few bits to sort out: threaded downtube mounts and remnants of bottle cage bolts in the holes which means that I had to shorten 4 bolts and screw them in gently as well as deploying a couple of cable ties. A bit ignominious for such a gem.

But... when I get it back, all pristine, I cannot possibly return it to it's former job as a winter bike, replete with crud catchers. So that means N=1 which equals 4. Yet, it's such a lovely ride. It's a perfect winter bike.

So if I get a cf frame off flea bay, what's out there that has good tyre clearance so that the eternal mud guard conundrum isn't an issue and what's going to give me that velvet ride*?

    (1) Yes get it resprayed and sorted out
    (2) Of course you can use it as a winter bike, whats nicer than riding a bike that is awesome ? ... in a couple of years time, get a fresh respray etc
    (3) when you are out with mud guards ... everyone else will have mudguards, but you will be on a C40 with mudguards not a chinese CF with mudguards.
  • Get it resprayed and sorted out Pinno, it's a Colnago

Get it sorted for that dry winter day.
Buy a proper winter bike for foul days, i.e. the rest. Sorted.
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.

    .

Someone with the knowhow would be able to sort those for you, are the bolts snapped off in the holes?

The older I get, the better I was.

  • Just get it sorted and ride it.
    Advocate of disc brakes.
  • Get it done. What's the point to f it just sitting there?

Yep. I can drill the old one's out and re-tap the holes, no problem (M5 FYI) but that won't fix the downtube mounts and there's a long scrape along the left hand side top tube that I touched up to best of my abilities using 13 different pots of paint to match the art deco but it's not the best.

BB shell needs TLC, 'B Stay' logos on both stays are just about disappeared, paint on the underside of the BB is just about non existent. It's all just a bit tired looking and she needs to be back to her former glory.

I'm inclined to go along with fd and the consensus: a great looking ,great riding winter bike.

It doesn't sit there MF - ii have used it for 4 consecutive winters.

And why not, just because it's winter it doesn't mean there aren't good days to be had.

  • Just use it - it has value beyond monetary.

That wouldn't happen if you had a Dolan like mine.

If I got a few scaffolding poles and welded them together and attached some dustbin lids, i'd have a Dolan.

  • That's brilliant advice from Garry there. Perhaps you should heed it.

Don't let Ugo hear you say that - his Dolan is a mile eating machine. Some might say one of the top 10 bicycles in the world.

    F*ck off you condescending tw@t.

I can't use the bloody thing when it's off getting done (4-6 weeks turnaround).

Today I went on the summer thoroughbred and got splatted by farmers muck due to the lack of crudders.Bloody Farmers.

Tart up the c40 and turn the summer thoroughbred into the winter hack - variety is the spice of life!

An interesting idea but the C40 is like saddling up an old horse for putting in the winter miles. I wouldn't put cruds on the race horse.
