Who or what defines a cyclist?

I consider myself a cyclist because I own a bicycle and I very occasionally ride it. However, I reckon I break all 95 of the Illuminati Rules of Cycling, yet I am still happy to consider myself a cyclist. So, who or what defines a cyclist in your opinion?

If that person wants to be defined as a cyclist.

I ride a bike .... I commute, I go on club rides, I go mountain biking, I have a BMX, 2 hardtails, 2 full sus, 2 road bikes, a single speed and a hybrid.

I enjoy riding my wifes Womens geo bike with Tannus solid tyres

I read about cycling, I play online cycling computer cames like Zwift, BR, GRT etc ... not for training, for "fun"

I dont define myself or see my self as a cyclist though .... I ride a bike .. well lots of them, every day .. I dont subscribe to a particular image though
  • Don't read the Illuminati rules or, if you must, do not take them nor yourself seriously.

    Problem solved.

    Now ride your bike.

Someone who has been cycling regularly for more than 10 years, or is under 20 years old.
    The rest are just ex-golfers.
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.

Sh!t, I'm an ex-golfer, despite only having swung a club in anger a handful of times! Unless you ignore the 20 year hiatus from age 19 to age 39.

Cyclist - someone riding a cycle.
Motorist - someone driving a motor.
Pedestrian - someone riding a pedo.

When you are not riding your bike you are something else - pick one.

There is only 1 rule I subscribe to and that's #5. When I leave a lung on a hill I simple tell myself that an carry in riding !!

So when you ride it, you're a cyclist. When you're not riding it, you're not a cyclist. Same as everyone else. Other definitions are - and almost certainly will be - available...

I occasionally sling my leg over a metal frame and pedal. I am a cyclist*.

*Don't give a toss about team kit, colour matching, 'posh' gear, cake or coffee. And I bought my bike from Halfords. And have never been on a club run.

Sadly, the definition of a cyclist is 'someone riding a bicycle'.

Despite all of this, my bike is still worth much more than my car.

You need to be cat 3 minimum and dress in either Castelli, Rapha or Assos. Otherwise you're not taking it seriously enough.

Only exception is Stevo, he goes all the way to Wales to ride a bike.

I think you're meant to self identify as stuff that you'd like to be. I'll go for fearless downhill hero who snaps knicker elastic at 50 paces.

Not necessarily. Thanks to local dogs, a local cycle path can be described as such

    That made me chuckle.

More importantly, when will I stop feeling like a beginner road cyclist? Is it cumulative miles? Technical knowledge? Years of experience? Number of Castelli garments?
