So, obviously I'm looking at new bikes and I think I know which one I want but there are two options and I'm conflicted.

I seek the seek the mind's advice.

Which would you choose: option one with Ultegra hydro discs and mechanical shifting, or option two with Ultegra Di2 and rim brakes?

I already have a bike with Ultegra hydro mechanical group set.

When will you be riding said bike? Fine sunny days only? If so, are you emigrating?

It will be the designated "best bike". Not sure that means the apocryphal "dry miles only".

If it's best bike I'd be tempted by Di2 and rims.

Di2 and rims, you already have the discs for wet days.

I think disc brakes are the mutts nuts as you know, I'd go Di2 and rims in this case for the same reason as those above.
We could get into the whole argument of swapping wheels between bikes, but lets be honest how often do you really need to do that. If you need to swap a wheel just take another bike instead.

I'd go for the Di2 and rims. Especially as it's the good weather bike. What do you have in mind?

I go along with Ben. The nicest riding / gear changing bike that I have is rim brake with old Dura Ace di2. I picked parts up on Ebay for considerably less than my Ultegra Di2 / Hydro set up. Any hint of rain and I use disc bike - otherwise for pure summer joy-rides DA/rim brake

The benefit of discs is that rims stop being "consumables" and you can spend a decent amount on good rims that will last as long as you want.

Well yes, I agree. Or SRAM (as long as it's Red), but I didn't want to muddy the waters too much.

I would honestly scour the internet for DA bargains rather than go for Ultegra.

For a best bike, which will be sparingly used in wet weather then I would go for Di2 and rims.

Well that's settled. Didn't take long after all.

BTW: rim brakes and mechanical gruppo. E-shifting is a fantastic solution to a problem no one has been able to identify. And disc brakes have no place on a best bike. Or a road bike, for that matter.

If you choose Di2, make sure you get the new battery pack with the WiFi capabilities.

Yeah. Next dilemma is crankset. My Stages is 105 so I have 105 cranks across all my other bikes so do I get one for this or do I go a bit more up market.....

Ok, I've decided to with a Rotor crank and q-rings (used them before an really liked them) but should I get a 30mm axle or a 24mm? If I go for a 24mm I can swap to a Shimano or Sram later with no issues. If I go for 30mm then I have no idea what the advantages are but I'd need to change the BB or get an adapter if I wanted to change. Given I don't throw down megawattzors is there any reason to go for the 30mm version (it's 50g lighter).
