If you're following Irma, you should know that Jose and Katia have already formed. Quite incredible stats from Irma in terms of sustained windspeed.

A week or so ago Breitbart news were sneering at the possibility of Harvey being intensified by global warning. The argument was that although Cat 4 landfall (as opposed to Cat 5 off shore) are rare on the US mainland they have happened. Two such events in a year are unheard of - but there is a possibility that the very next named storm - Irma may well be Cat 4 landfall when it hits Florida. Surprisingly Breitbart does not appear to be reporting on this. It is unbelievable - and frightening at the same time that two other lower Cat storms have formed at the same time. This is reminding me of 2005 when a record number of named storms formed.

What I want to know is why UK government, knowing that a massive hurricane was about to hit it's territories, sat and watched it unfold. Unlike the French and Dutch who sent out their military in advance to assist their protectorates before and for the aftermath of the devastation.

The UK is releasing about £12-18m for aid to its territories that are now uninhabited. As if that's enough.

    Very poor response from us.
Always be yourself, unless you can be Aaron Rodgers....Then always be Aaron Rodgers.

Add to that why when Caroline Lucas asked a very fair question in the Commons today she was accused of showing lack of humanity. Yes, Caroline Lucas, a lack of humanity.

Latest GFS has Irma squarely fronting up to Florida, the best storm, the greatest.

Jose has formed and there's a depression to the East of Jose too that could deepen.

Only, smaller nations are the ones paying right now.
  • It's also quite breezy on Neptune today.

I saw somewhere that this hurricane is the size of France. I decided to convert this into proper SI units, and was shocked to discover that's 22.5 Wales.

How many football pitches is that? I also need to know how many Olympic sized pools worth of water it contains.

Oh, and we're still in the EU and hence should be using the metric unit which is the Belgium. Hopefully we can revert to the imperial Wales measurement soon.

If you are looking for a silver lining in the rather fast moving cloud, then this is probably a good thing for the insurance industry in the medium term.

There was a thread on here with lots of links about stuff like aircraft in the skies and this, which I found. You can drag and rotate the globe and see the Hurricane's clearly:

Have a quick look at the air movement over Antarctica.

    Yep she s a monster.

sort of sticks in the throat that the UK tax payer will pick up the tab for rebuilding tax havens for an awful lot of people who dont believe in paying taxes......
  • Incredible scenes from Barbuda, that's written off twice in about 20 years now.

For when the Wales is just not big enough there is a unit equal to one thousand Waleses, known as the KiloWales

Yesterday, the local BBC news were interviewing (by phone) a Nottingham chap who was living out in the Caribbean selling time-shares. He was expressing his disgust that the UK had not given him more support.

"The Americans were here in half a day!" he said.

Another quote from him that made me chuckle...

"The roof of the apartment building was ripped off, I had to push a settee against the door to stop me being sucked out by Irma"

I do find it strange that UK citizens expect the Govt to helicopter them out of situations they don't like wherever they are in the world

I thought the point was geographical and the relevant distances.

    Yes, it was.

Considering that they had just survived the hurricane and the airport was most likely a mess, what did he expect?
