Stage 5 Benicàssim / Alcossebre
175.7km - Coefficient 3 (Hard Stage)
PROFIL.png

Last km - if you have not recce'd this final hill you could come a cropper as the road book is incorrect

PROFILKMS.png
Listed as
Km 175.7 - Ermita Sta. Lucía. Alcossebre.3.4 kilometre-long climb at 4.2% - category 3
But unless I am missing something 340 climbing metres in 3400m riding distance is pretty much 10% not 4.2%. I have had a look on map my ride and it brings the ascents to 320m so I think the chart is right and the text is wrong.

Geodiversity
Benicàssim – Alcossebre

The stage takes place through the Valencian regions of El Maestrazgo and La Plana, rocks, stones, rocks again...

Crosswinds? There is about 40km riden on the coast road which - even in hot hot spain - can bring the possibility of cross winds but they will have to be stronger than forecasts

Valencia is the traditional rice growing area of Spain and (it claims) the birthplace of Paella - which they don't call paella but the even simpler name: arroz (rice) - it is very good in Castellon la Plana where the regional speciality is Arroz Empedrodo (basically paella with beans as well as your normal fishy ingredients)

This region is of course home to Moscatel de Valencia - the vineyards tend to be South of where we are racing today

And horses in Castellon

Yes, finish has ramps of over 15% and is 9% or so average.

Poor guy. He's had a crap year...
  • Paela can be very disappointing if not done properly. There is a fiduea which is made with noodles instead of rice and I'm salivating thinking of one i had in that region - cuttlefish and monkfish were in there

I have had a similar dish made with stuff that was like orzo pasta - just a little bit bigger than grains of rice and same shape; lovely. agree on the paella - but anything that is practically universal is gonna have good versions and bad; I think it is also the sort of thing that is so much nicer when you have cooked it yourself
  • It's going to be good!

Sadly I have to go to a barbeque :(

So I won't see the stage or eat Paella.

Was told by a great spanish cook - a friends grandmother - that anyone who tells you what must and must not go in a paella is mad; they vary from house to house, village to village etc. She said that it is like saying what cannot go / must be in a sandwich.

    Big break
Julian Alaphilippe (Quick Step), Ruben Fernandez and Marc Soler (Movistar Team), Michael Schwarzmann (Bora-Hansgrohe), Alexis Gougeard (Ag2r La Mondiale), Davide Villella (Cannondale-Drapac), Marco Haller and Matvey Matvey Mamykin (Katusha-Alpecin), Matej Mohoric (UAE Team Emirates), Alexey Lutsenko (Astana), Valerio Agnoli (Bahrain-Merida), Jérémy Maison (FDJ), Merhawi Kudus (Dimension Data), Lluis Mas and Hector Saez (Caja Rural-Seguros RGA), Michel Kreder (Aqua Blue Sport) and Jetse Bol (Manzana-Postobón) tackle the cat-3 alto de Cabanes with a lead of 2'45".

the paella is the flattish pan isn't it? - so just chuck it all in I say!

Thats a big break! Jetse bol certainly works hard for that Colombian team that we were talking about earlier in the season

They need to speed up a little. It's going to be touch and go whether I see the end.

Looks like there will be some gaps from the look of that final climb. 20% section with 1km to go.
  • Does the break have enough advantage to go all the way?
With this long descent they might even gain more time.

There's enough strength in there to stay away. Over 5 minutes with 30km to go.

Think they'll bring it back under 5 minutes before the finish.

5 km to go... it's going to be a breakaway day. Peloton 7.20 behind the front two.
