Outside time limit

Never really got a definitive answer on this I know it is different of tt's and mountain finishes and flat stages and vague ideas about the time - it always seems to be 37 minutes in the Alps! and that the organisers adjust this accordingly day to day

but for example in the Tour how exactly is it worked out for each stage ?

and Is this percentage known pre-stage?

Dossard 25 is Rider 25, aka Alexander Porsev of the Katusha team and he’s out of the Tour de France because he finished 34 seconds after the cut

Here is the section from the forthcoming Vuelta

This section tells you the group of the stage (the coefficient in TdF terms). Once you have identified the Group you refer below and find the average speed of the first past the post and you have the cutoff percentage

So for the final brute of a stage to Angliru 117.5km - assuming average speed of 35km/h for the winner. This would be a time of 3h21m

From top list that is a Group 5 stage.
From the bottom list a Group 5 at 35km/h is 14pct.
The Winner's time of 3h21m is grossed up by 14pct to 3h49m - so an extra 27-28minutes.
  • That's a great table thanks.

It's the short stages when the GC battle kicks off early and doesn't let up that cause problems. In those cases the modelling breaks down and it's very hard for the autobus to make the cut.

If I recall on the tour a few years back riders were not excluded after missing the cut off since most of the green jersey contenders were in it, so organisers can pick and choose as well.

yes - having now looked a bit further there are all sort of caveats - including how much of the peloton can be wiped out in one go - and leniency for adverse weather - medical treatment on the road etc
  • Formigal was one such example of all 3 posts above.

Short stage where GC kicked off, where lots of contenders (not just sprinters but domestiques too) missed the cut and organisers showed some leniency

    They're very important.
