BLUF; I need a set of very robust 29er / 700c rim brake wheels quickly and for cheap. Wheel weight not an issue.

So, a very good friend of mine is in need of some new (or just new-to-him) wheels.

The problem is he's off touring very soon, and is a big lad.

The wheels must be 29er / 700c and rim brake. I can't remember what speed freehub, I think 8 or 9, so any 10 or 11 sp hub can be spaced appropriately.

His current set aren't man enough to survive, but I'm a bit out of the loop WRT bike wheels. The weight of the wheelset is of virtually no concern, but they can't be solid steel...

Oh, and to make it more difficult, not only is time a large factor, he's not got a bulging wallet either.

What do you suggest Bike Radar?

32 or 36 hole wheels would be best for heavyweight touring. Most factory wheels have much lower spoke counts so handbuilts are likely.

For example, you can get handbuilt 36 hole Mavic Open Elite rims on Tiagra hubs for £140 from Cycle Basket delivered.

Your local wheelbuilder might have something similar in stock at a decent price.

Alternatively, I can sell you a set of used but recently re-rimmed, tuned, trued and serviced handbuilt 32H/36H black Ambrosio Evolution on black 5700 Shimano 105 hubs for £70 + postage. At 2.1kg these are solid wheels, but perfect for touring. I'll thrown in a decent set of partially used 25mm tyres for free.
