Damaged wheels & insurance

Hello, I have just returned from 10 days riding in Ibiza and on my last day I hit something in the road (not a pot hole) where the road dipped & went from tarmac to concrete to accommodate a storm drain running under the road, in turn this buckled both my Mavic ksyrium elite s wheels which are usually bullet proof! I have managed to remove most of the buckle on both wheels but it has left my front wheel with a slight dent in the rim, and now braking is affected and I am 100% sure is not repairable, its the first time I have had these wheels buckle like this. my question is will my insurance company pay out for a new set of wheels? I took out cover with Pro-Cycle Insurance for my trip.

    No not as yet, never claimed off cycle insurance before so didn't want to rush in & just wondered whether anyone had any experience with these cycle travel insurance companies?

    read the policy and see what it says, they vary

    as long as the damage and circumstances are covered by the policy, then they'll pay out as stipulated in the policy (otherwise you go through various stages of compulsion until they pay+costs)

    unless it says "replace with new", be prepared for an offer reflecting the age and depreciated value of the wheels

    Only you've got the policy. Read it and see if you're covered.

    The policy summary says this: Covered for
    Loss or Damage
    Provides cover for theft, loss or accidental damage to your bike
    and its accessories. Replacement is on a new for old basis.

    And this: Exclusions
    Loss or Damage
    Loss or damage where you have failed to comply with the
    required security precautions.
    Loss or Damage to accessories which are not accidentally
    damaged at the same time as your bike
    Loss or Damage when handed to a recognised transport
    provider, unless the bike is securely packaged and a receipt
    obtained.
    Loss or Damage when the bike is used for hire, reward,
    couriering
    Marring, scratching, denting, or any cosmetic change which
    does not impair the function and performance of the bike.

    Looks like you're covered, best phone them

    Probably, but that's the summary. The actual policy will have a lot more words, some of them possibly exclusions or limitations, hence the word 'summary.'

    The OP has the policy, just needs to actually read it, which is really something you should do before buying it.

    Sorry gents its been a busy few days, I have just checked the policy and it states " Accidental Damage to your Bicycle What is covered..We will at our option repair to its previous condition or, if beyond economic repair, replace any part or all of your Bicycle, with an article of the same type, quality and functionality. Where the Bicycle is economical to repair but the parts required are obsolete we will pay a Cash settlement equivalent to the cost of the repair of the Bicycle. We may choose specialist suppliers or repairers".

    Just to add I have checked the bike today for further damage and not only do I have 2 wheels that are screwed I have also fractured my carbon steerer which has all but written off the bike :?
    I will give them a call tomorrow and hopefully try and recover some kind of cash payout?!

    I'm confused/curious at what you hit, that damaged both wheels, and fractured a steerer tube! I can't picture what you mean, any other description so I know what to look out for?

    there was a short stretch of concrete road across a river drain in Ibiza, and I hit a lip of concrete where the road changed from tarmac to the concrete, and because the road dipped down, my weight pushed down on the bars and cracked the back of the carbon stem, not badly just hairline cracks. It really was a strange one as I have hit many a pot hole, even on my carbon cyclocross bike but never experienced anything like it!

    Did the insurers come back? Interested to see what cycle insurers do as I've just got some insurance myself for the first time.
