START TIME: TBD
After the start in Foligno, which will host the Giro for the 7th time, the route quickly leaves the old town centre and takes relatively wide and mainly straight roads for over 12 kilometres, until past Bevagna (time recording). The route then starts to climb at an average 4-5% gradient, and reaches Madonna delle Grazie, where the road becomes a false flat up. A fast-running and technical descent twists and turns all the way to San Marco, where the road flattens and straightens out. The route takes a U-turn in Bastardo (second time recording), then a false-flat uphill drag leads to Montefalco. The slopes are never steep, yet the climb is unrelenting. The road, narrowed at points, leads all the way to the walled city of Montefalco (unprecedented stage town). The final kilometres are slightly uphill. In the last kilometre, the route descends and passes through a gateway, and then goes up again, on a short, steep ramp, leading into the 200-m long, uphill home straight, on 6-m wide asphalt road.

In the interests of keeping this race remotely interesting, I hope that is the case. Thinking more like a minute maybe minute and a half myself0 -
Montefalco is worth a visit, a fairly typical hill top town of the region. The local wine is excellent, a DOCG wine (the highest ranking Italian wine denomination, grown using the sagrantino grape variety. Two wines are produced, a red, the Montefalco Sagrantino secco, and a sweet red dessert wine, the Montefalco Sagrantino passito. I think I've still got a bottle of the latter in storage, might dig that out later.0

Stats seem to agree (from @daniellloyd1)
8 pro TT's (not incl. prologues) between Dumoulin & Quintana since 2014. On average, Dumoulin is 2.87s/km faster. Interesting to see how Pinot gets on as well though.

According to Jonathan Edwards, if Geraint is going well, he might catch Adam Yates as they go off a minute apart.
Trouble is Yates is ahead on the GC........
G says he's hurting a lot."Science is a tool for cheaters". An anonymous French PE teacher.0 -
Having now looked at the stage profiles, it appears there is a healthy amount of TTs and flat stages, so presumably a very good chance for Dumoulin overall.0
-
Funnily enough Quintana had a very poor TdF long TT when it was hilly, better when it was flatter. Just a bad day I guess but it hard to predict.0
-
You would certainly expect Dumoulin to gain more seconds/km in the pan flat TT on the final day.
Interesting that Pinot beat Dumoulin in the hilly TT in Romandie last year. Can't remember if there was any reason why Dumoulin was below par that day.0 -
Don't forget Pinot.
I get the luxury of watching at home, inbetween rather frantic trips to the bathroom.0 -

Really interested to see how G fairs.0

Apparently there's a tailwind for the first part and then a headwind for the finish. So pacing will be important.0

I would be delighted if Tom D puts 5 minutes into Nairo Q and then sits on him for the next 10 days.0

The way the race went the other day, it would be fascinating. Quintana disappears off up the road and Dumoulin like a terminator just keeps coming back.0 -

It would indeed......I didn't like the way Quintana dismissed Dumoulin as a "specialist" when interviewed yesterday. To my mind, Dumoulin is a considerably more well-rounded/versatile rider across all the disciplines than Quintana, who is the very definition of a 'one trick pony'. Albeit a very good trick (climbing the last 5km of a Grand Tour mountain-top finish at a very rapid rate).0 -
Thomas now fastet at the first check point.
Yates 3rd."Science is a tool for cheaters". An anonymous French PE teacher.0 -
Landa more than decent, given the bad leg."Science is a tool for cheaters". An anonymous French PE teacher.0

Jungels goes faster!
Good TT from Yates if he keeps it up.0 -
This looks like it suits the classic time-triallers more than first thought. I reckon Dumoulin will take at least 3 mins off Quintana. It's only a bit of sport, Mun. Relax and enjoy the racing.0

Seems like there's some confusion over Geraint's second split time...0
