Chronic wrist pain

Before anyone says it, I'm left handed and this is my right wrist

I've had problems with my right wrist for at least 7 years now (maybe even 10) and I'm beginning to think it might not just sort itself out...

Background: I first remember hurting it falling over when I was about 15 but I'm not sure what happened specifically. It really started with a crash in 2010/2011 when I lost the front wheel into a corner and got my hand caught under me which had the effect of pushing my palm towards my wrist and over extending the tendons on the top. It hurt for a few days but as I was in Canada and claiming on insurance for healthcare was convoluted I rested it for a week then convinced myself it was fine. Rode with a niggling pain for another few months until I was home again. My GP said there probably wasn't anything that could be done if I had broken it months ago and told me to take painkillers until it went away.

The next time I hurt it was about two years ago, I had an OTB and broke my scaphoid and a hairline fracture in the top of my radius (which still prevents my hand from rotating upwards intermittently). I don't think this had an effect on my persistent problems as they are the same as they were before but they did X-ray my wrist a few times and it didn't show anything which wasn't recent, leading me to think I have a tendon problem

Pain: It hurts right in the joint, it hurts most after a hard ride or lots of jumping. It clicks a lot and feels like my hand moves from back to front in relation to my wrist whilst it clicks. I wear a compression sleeve on it when it flares up

Has anyone had anything similar? Any solutions? Doctors don't seem to know what to suggest and I'm worried about it getting progressively worse

    I'm in my mid fifties.

Almost every bit of me aches or clicks at some time.

Something for you to look forward to....

Maybe worth ponying up and seeing a decent Sports Physio. He may have some idea what it is and may be able to help?

Wrist is a pretty complex joint. So what has worked for someone else might not work for you.

Ask about getting a nerve conduction test.

Do you ever get pins and needles or numbness?

There's plenty of people who do it with the "wrong" hand so you're not in clear out of that one.

If it's been persisting for as long, there's definitely a problem there. Unfortunately, it's probably going to be something very specific, especially if there's a possible connection to a few acute injuries. So even if you find someone online who had similar symptoms, it's very unlikely it was the same problem.

As for the injuries - I'm not sure I fully understand your description but it seems to me the pain crept in after the first injury and that you didn't allow the injury to rest properly. Maybe something healed incorrectly.

Get in touch with a doctor who has a specialisation on athletes. He might give more insight into finding a diagnose, as he's used to work with people who don't take a bit of pain as a sign to have a rest :)

Now you mention it, my little finger and ring finger are certainly less sensitive than the other side. I got pins and needles quite regularly after the scaphoid break but it's better now

Sums it up neatly I guess, thanks for the advice guys. My GF's mum works for a private hospital and gets good rates on one of their sports consultant people so I'll make some enquiries

You are right, that indeed does sound like a tendon problem, weird that the doctor didn't suggest that... My dad had a damaged tendon and he had to use a crutch and a PEMF device, and after a few months he was okay. But if in your case the pain stayed for so long a surgery might be needed.
