ah, just what the country needs .... a general election

not enough stability in politics at the moment, so a nice general election on the cards will do wonder for the next few months, then we can all benefit from a good old hung government

    perfecto

Ah, but at least that hung government will represent the will of the people so we can properly get on with having strong leadership.

This is bonkers. Utterly bonkers. She's essentially just attacked the other parties for not playing nicely and doing scrutiny. She's attached the Scots massively. That won't play well. She's admitted that there isn't strong leadership by saying that this will be about strong leadership. It's utterly mad.

That said, she'll take 100 seats off Corbyn.

Shouldn't she be focusing on getting the best possible deal for Brexit?

    It'll be a cakewalk, unfortunately.

bit of blackmailing the electorate first, if i don't get an absolute mandate, it's your fault we didn't get a good deal

She's essentially just attacked Parliament. Told it (and the HOL) that it can't have different views, can't represent the 48%, can't scrutinise, can't think. This is scary stuff.

yep i d love to see lab and libdems to actually say brexit is a disaster in the making and call for an alternative vision, takes leadership though and i doubt either have it.

Exactly, those 48% still have opinions and views, hopefully the non ref voters will get voting this time.. If only there was an opposition :(

wtf is the point of an unannounced statement from the PM if the content is all pre-released to the press and they're discussing it all before the announcement?!

Why stop at Brexit? What about benefits, law and order, privacy? Once you're in that's the will of the people. The others should agree with you all the time, every time.

I hope so too. They won where I am in the Richmond Park by election and Tory Boy Goldsmith was popular but for his stance on Brexit, unfortunately I'm not sure how much the rest of the country will follow suit.

I would love to see that speech fact checked.

Is the country becoming united while Westminster isn't? The reverse, I'd have said.

Not sure about Westminster but I think saying the country is united is utterly delusional. Unfortunately with the lack of opposition the ballot boxes might lead her to believe it is.

The issue is wether Labour will vote for it. If the GE goes ahead, they are likely to lose seats, if they refuse to vote for it then they look scared of "the people" unless they can come up with a decent excuse.

I agree, has she just put her foot in it big time? Just hope the lib dems can get the message across that there is an alternative, it's not too late, mass migration from labour to lib dems, hopefully Cleggs tuition fee and joining tories moment of glory will be forgotten about?

But if she wants divisions to be opened again in the country, then this is definitely the way to achieve it.

It's only some of the Conservatives that have completely abandoned everything they thought about the EU before the referendum. That's why they are the party that seems united.

Ken Clarke intended to stand down in 2020, I wonder if he will stand in this election. He is likely to be at odds with the manifesto of his party. But tory remainers/soft brexiteers would want a big beast like Ken on their side in any post-election battles on the negotiations.

pretty sure Ken Clarke no longer qualifies as a big beast. His main strengths are that he is recognisable and can not be bought/bullied as he is on his way out

    BBC News
Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said he welcomed the prime minister's decision, saying it would "give the British people the chance to vote for a government that will put the interests of the majority first."

Unless the party defy Coryn, it looks like it's on.
