So I mnade a school boy error when joining my Shimano chain...

I have joined it twice on the same link:

Is this safe, or should I consider replacing it?

I don't know that it's inherently any more risky, I'd probably be inclined to just bring a couple of quick/missing/power links along when you ride it (and a chain breaker) in case it does come apart.

Each joint is independent of any other, I see that as no greater risk than two joints further apart.

I always carry a chain splitter and powerlinks anyway.

Agreed it is better to avoid opening the chain at the same pin as repeatedly pushing pins through the sideplates will result in the plates being stressed with the potential for failure. Now you've done it there's not much you can do about it but as long as it seems OK I'd just ride it as normal TBH. Just avoid doing it again in future....

Thanks for the replies. I always keep a small chain to and pins in my saddle bag.

I made the mistake a few months ago now, and have done many hours of turbo training without any issues so I might be lucky!

It's not a question of luck at all - it's fine.

  • But what if you'd taken it to your bike shop to have a new chain fitted and they'd done that!! You'd want a new chain!!

If they used two pins to put on a new chain I'd want a new bike shop.
