help identify part

could someone tell me what this part is? the little plastic collar on the seat tube just above the bottom bracket. Scott CR1 bike. hopefully the links work

    It's a chain catcher, sometimes called a 'dog fang' because of its shape. It is there to prevent a poorly adjusted front derailleur from shifting the chain off the small chainring and damaging the frame.

    I can confirm that it's a chain catcher but would disagree that it's only necessary for a poorly adjusted front derailleur. The chain can jump off a properly adjusted one as well - unusual but it does happen!
