What would your 5 be? There's an article on mtb 5 and one about road 5 might be along soon, but I'm curious as to what your 5 would be.

By road I mean all varieties from touring/adventure/gravel to aero/TT.

Assuming we're talking about components rather than clothing, here's my 5:
Shimano Ultegra groupset - flawless performance and great value at current prices.
Deda Zero 100 bars and stem - not expensive, light, look good, used on plenty of pro bikes.
Continental GP4000sii tyres - can't go wrong with these IMHO
H Plus Son Archetype rims - a modern classic. Light enough, look great, stiff and robust.
Elite Custom Race bottle cages - cheap as chips, do the job, look good.

I'm interpreting the question as 5 best road innovations, which, since i started riding are:
    1. Brake/ gear shifter integration
    2. LED lights
    3. Lighter, more p***ture-resistant tyres
    4. Better brakes: even dual-pivot are so much better than vile old sidepulls
    5. Light, effective helmets

It's just a hill. Get over it.

    1. Speedplay pedals.
    2. Cambleback podium bottles.
    3. Veloflex tyres.
    4. Quick links.

I'd like to say the Limits power meter but firstly I don't have one so it's just the idea that looks brilliant to me and secondly they seem to have folded after the first release.

Edit - The quick release is pretty good.

You don't want one either but they haven't folded. They are currently developing the 2nd gen version according to my LBS whom Limits sponsor.

And yet you quietly obeyed the requirement to provide 5 responses. And question those who only provide 4. You don't make your own rules - you talk the talk but when it comes down to it, you are nothing but a meek conformer.........

I hope they haven't folded beause I still think their product looks great. Just wish I could get one. Do you think they are making a dual sided version?

The one in-depth review of it I've seen ended with the bloke sending it back as it made his pedals stick out half an inch either side, or something close to that, and he just couldn't get comfortable using it. Great idea, but that's a pretty big flaw.

I can change the spindles on my pedals for shorter ones. Or I could move my cleats inboard. Or I could leave them and the extra length of the power meter will stop my shoe from rubbing on the crank arm and squeaking.

I didn't know such things were possible.
Graeme Obree would approve, and my shoes are nowhere near my cranks.
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.

n+1 ... for those times you walk out to your bike and find something wrong - pick the next in the line
cycling caps (with a visor) ... ah the ability to flick them up or down if its rainy or the sun is glaring
USB LED lights ... gone are the days of heavy batteries, dim light bulbs and wheel based dynamos - charge once a week and be seen for miles
spd's ... ah a clip and cleat system where the cleat is so small it is easily combined in to all sorts of shoe that are useable on AND off the bike from MTB, trainer, cycling shoe, cyclocross
sks raceblade pro's... mud guards are ugly, but waking up an hour before a club ride, looking out the window and thinking "I feel like being nice to the person behind me" and attaching a set of guards in under 2mins rocks !

Fraud! What were you saying about 'N+1'? You should have a bike to fit mudguards on to on a permanent basis.

Not only that, but try asking the rider behind for their opinion.
You may be as disappointed as them.
