Your Regents Park and Box Hill Times

Hi All,

I noticed recently that my fastest Regents Park lap time was similar to my fastest Box Hill time.
As they are both very popular I'd be interested to see if this is the same for others and if there is some sort of ratio/pattern to be drawn from it.

The two segments on Strava I'm referring too are:
Regents Park CCW https://www.strava.com/segments/620895
Box Hill (zig zag road) https://www.strava.com/segments/627910

Would be great if people could fill in their times and number of attempts:

Name - Regents (attempts) - Box Hill (attempts)
Tim - Reg: 7:57 (67) - Box: 7:44 (12)

I'd imagine most peoples' fastest time on RP will have involved some drafting or favourable winds which wouldn't be applicable to BH. My fastest is 6:43 round RP but I have a 6:57 at the same power output.

I think this is pure coincidence for you. RP times will depend on drafting & group discipline, Box Hill on your own fitness and how fresh you are when you arrive. E.g. I have 6:22 RP but 9:38 Box Hill because I've never done Box except as part of a 100-mile sportive (either RLS100, FT or Tour of England) so have always arrived knackered and needed to manage power to have anything left for the remaining 60km or so. NB the RP lap had *lower* average power than the Box Hill segment, but twice the max power.
  • Sure, there are lots of variables as you have said, its just a trend I noticed amongst the few people I follow and also the KOM/QOM on the segments.

As I don't have a power meter i've no idea but I'd have guessed that a similar time would require a similar power for both.
  • RP is pretty much flat, and Box hill is a climb so very different.

In theory, a big powerful rider is going to do much better in RP than on BH. Eg. 360W for 80kg (4.5w/kg).

And a small light rider will be better on the hill, eg. 300W for 60kg (5w/kg)

Down on the flat, the light rider is 60W down, and his lower weight means nothing.

    6:01 Box Hill
    6:02 RP

I think the OP's on to something!
  • Well I've got one!
I'm claiming that as scientific proof!

I'm also very similar, 6.10 RP (solo) and 6.12 Box (solo).
Looking to get both sub-6 in the next month or so.
  • RP - 7:35
    BH - 7:16

Close enough to offer further proof :P

Last time I went up Boxhill I really went for it, and was disappointed to get nowhere near my pb. There was a wind blowing from the south though, so I think that would affect two of the zigs (which are longer) more than the zag...

  • I've no skin in this fight since I don't live there, but will say this:

I really wish Strava would make two KOM/QOM's. Individual and group. I find it ludicrous because if it was a group then it's really a "team" KOM. The pros claim that "the team wins". But I only see individual names on KOM's. So in my opinion a KOM gotten as part of a group is disingenuous if the team isn't listed.

It does matter on climbs too, especially when the KOM average speed is in the 16 to 18 mph range. However, this is usually not the case.

Here in the US in the city I live there are a LOT of triathlon riders. It's different rules, but the times stand. I know on the flat 7 mile course I'm #24 on I could get into the top 5 on an Ironman legal TT bike.

Guess we just have to suck it up and push harder.

Nothing Strava can do about Ironman bikes or the wind, but they could at least make teams/groups an option.

Think about the team effort this way, without the team you ALONE could NOT achieve the KOM. So either list the team or do separate people.

    BH: 8:17
    RP: 7:21

I must caveat that I've never pushed hard on either, I can never pace myself for the first half of BH, and I've always coasted round RP with much slower friends driving them on.

I would assume a mid 7 minute BH time and a low 6 minute RP time.

    I'm a 92kg power rider (315w FTP).

To add to my earlier contribution.

In terms of overall ranking, my BH time is much more impressive than my RP time. Which correlates with what type of rider I am.

So I think, OP, this is more a coincidence than anything else. Good spot though!
