Hub play cured, but how?

Hi

I have been experiencing side to side play in my front hub. I assumed the cartridge bearings were shot so I ordered a new set. However, today I removed the wheel and tightened the the quick release skewer up agains the hub end caps, similar to what a bearing press would do. Once I had done this and it could not be tightened anymore I secured the wheel back in the bike to find the play had completely gone.

I am curious to see if anyone has got an idea as to why this has cured my problem?

cheers

Sounds like the bearing was not seated properly. The pressure from the QR popped it back in place.

It sounds like you have a slack fit in your wheel hub to bearing. If it's moved, the chances are it will move again, the wheel hub tends to be softer material than the bearing so the diameter will have scraped. You might find it pop out again and you will need retaining compound for a decent fit.
