I caught a nice photo of the Moon and Venus. 80mm lens, so nothing too detailed...

I have a few quid to spend, actually, so maybe one of you could recommend a 200mm (or so) lens? :)

And then a few of our cat who just loves when we change the bedsheets! A couple here...

Love those Ben, the third one is wonderful!

Off skiing tomorrow so hopefully will be able to brighten the thread with some snowy scenes. Hard to believe this one I took nearly ten years ago.

What camera do you want the 200mm for?

I must admit I'm moving more and more towards wide only.

Thank you! And I'm looking forward to the snow scenes!

I am simply looking to add 'ammo' to my camera bag. I shot the cat photos with a prime f1.8 50mm and the moon one with 28-80mm. I also have a standard 'kit' lens (18-50mm).

Friend of mine has just bought a 70-200 f4 for her Sony A7 (can't remember which version) and is getting some stunning results.

My (limited) experience leads me towards buying the best lenses I can before changing bodies, and drawing a line when I realise no-one is ever going to pay me for my images!

Difficult to get shots like that without over exposure. Did you use a filter narbs?

    Nice board shot Ben.

Re.: Faceless portrait. I must say, I am not sure about the contemporary style of cutting a picture off where the subject is not complete or central Perhaps I need enlightening.

It's definitely a bit experimental, cutting off half the subject. In terms of composition, more generally, I try to obey the rule of thirds as it more often than not works quite well. :)

Does it need a focal point? I mean, it's a little bit too much like a silhouette. I suppose if you added too much lighting to the helmet for example, it would end up like an ad shot.
How about half a cat*? I like cats, especially mischievous one's.

On Sunday, the only sunshine appeared like a golden penny between the hills on my left and the thick cloud above it whcih has been omnipresent for 2 weeks solid. A few had stopped to look at it. I had a clear view as I was out pedalling.
At one point, it was perfectly positioned between the two features.
I was kicking myself because I didn't have my camera with me.

That would have made a lovely shot. I love when the sun appears like that.

I'll see if I can get our cat to pose for a portrait. Happy to experiment with composition for the benefit of the thread! :)

Focal point. I submitted the first one, for the challenge and I like to think the focal point is the lack of facial features. But this malarkey is very subjective. One man's Dalai Lama is another man's Nigel Farage.

I railed against smartphones for years, then finally gave in, and have to admit I'd not be without it now. A few weeks ago I went for a ride when there was still mist down around the Exe, and when I got back towards the river (having been in bright sunlight for much of the ride), I had a feeling there might be some interesting light. This is pretty much as my naked eye saw the scene - no photoshopping involved.

I'm too lazy to bother with anything than auto settings, on the whole: point and shoot. It's more about being in the right place at the right time.

    That's lovely BT.

Maybe next time, take a picture of half the tree (it's all part of Ben's big experiment).

Thanks. I was tanking along on the bike on a lovely flat bit of road, and was loath to stop... but rather glad I did. I'm still not sure about the framing - I rarely bother to zoom on the phone, as it's just horrible digital zoom - and though I could play about with cropping, in the end the central tree seemed to work pretty well. Using a tree between me and a low sun is one of my hackneyed techniques, but it sometimes gets a nice shot.

I suppose that of all my other photos, the other 'lucky' one I was most pleased with was this one... just a gap in the clouds at the right time, and a good zoom on my Sony HX50.

That first image is beautiful Brian, congrats!

Ben, I love your second portrait. Excellent composition which really pulls the eye from the negative space. I should push myself to enter some challenges, I need something like that.

    Thanks narbs.

That's exactly why I enter the challenges, to be pushed to take photos I usually wouldn't.

    You should sign up! :)https://www.liop.co.uk/liop-challenge/
