Finding the Right Shoes

I'm borrowing a friend's bike for training purposes, and believe it or not, even his clipless shoes fit! I found this very odd because I have very wide feet. Long-story-short, I guess they don't fit as well as I thought. My feet are cramping pretty quickly, no numbness, just cramping in my mid-foot, the widest part. Could ride longer if it wasn't for the foot pain.

Suggestions for a budget-conscious wide shoe?

Thanks!!

Probably the best thing to do ,would be try a few pairs on and decide for yourself.
  • I had problems finding shoes to fit as I'm an odd size (UK 7, but wide). I tried loads, all the usual brands, but finally found a cheap pair of Garneau ones from Evans that fit perfectly.

So, yeah, just try on as many as you can and don't assume that more expensive will always mean better...

As others have said try as many as you can, I have 4 pairs in sizes 39, 40 (2 pairs) and 41.

Try as many pairs on as you can .... I must have tried a dozen or so on before I found the right style / size

My road shoes are a 9 1/2 men's and my mtb shoes are a 9 1/2 women's as I have slim girly feet as my wife calls them. I struggle to get men's shoes to fit comfortably ..... the up side is I can usually get a cheap bargain as there are not many women with Large feet and these are the sizes that are left over In the sales

Well educated bike guy once told me if you find a pair that fit you 8 out of ten for comfort, buy them regardless of colour or cost

Thanks for all the input. Another Newbie question; it occurred to me that maybe my issue is Arch Support. How do I know if it's the width or the support aspect of the shoe that is causing the pain? In addition to wide, my feet are also nearly flat.

Some brands supply shoes in normal and wide fittings eg Lake, that may help.
I use the wide size and I found them to be a great help and get on with them better than most brands
    I ride therefore I am

If you still have access to his shoes try a thicker footbed/insole.

Otherwise go to a shop and try various makes.

I cannot wear Adidas trainers as I find them too narrow. I wear Specialised cycling shoes and they fit really well.

Some brands offer an insole that has 3 different removable arch support options, which gradually increase in height.

Shimano are great for this. I bought a pair of R320 when the price came down. The insoles adjustability is second to non. Very fell fitting and look great.

Try the new shimanos. Extremely comfortable and amazing value for money. Most importantly they are comfortable.

R171s are my favourite. Of course if you can get R321 then go for it.

The R9 is also great and I have R171 and R9. I have lot of room at the front and I am sure wide feet can be accommodated. IF not then they have specific wide feet R171s you can buy.

I got some shimano rp3 road shoes - good fit for my girly feet but as I said before go to your local bike shop and try on as many as possible and don't just choose on basis of brand or colour

Those are the old Shimano's, aren't they? R321 has been superseded by the RC9 S-Phyre and the R171 by the RC7. Both shoes use Boa's instead of ratchets and are available in more half sizes than before and still have the wide fitting option.

The R9 R7 is not the same as the RC9. Thats my next target.

The R9 for £150 gets you the moldedable shoe. The R171 is a step down from the R321 which was shoe of the year in one of the cyclying magazines. But more importantly the R171 is just a bargain in terms of performance for the pricing. I know the R171 has the wide option and I've had one but sold to a friend who wanted it very badly.

Yes, I know the RC range is not the same as the R range, I was referring to the fact that the R171 and R321 are last years shoes so not readily available in all the sizes.
