Replacement for Fox Triad shock needed

Hiya,
i’ve a 2009? Specialized Stumpjumer FSR Elite that has a 7.25”x1.75” (184.2mm x 44.5mm) Fox triad shock. It’s buggered and i can either send it back to Mojo to have it fixed or buy a new shock.
the issue is the 7.25”x1.75” (184.2mm x 44.5mm)side seems to be a specialised proprietary size and there are not many replacements available - the closest i can seem to get is a 7.5”x2” (190mm x 51mm) stock shock.

whilst the 7.5”x2” size is a bit out of spec, I think i might be able to get away with it on the bike (opinions welcomed)

at the moment, i’m looking at a 2011 RP23 http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/fox- ... -prod78528 but the top fitting looks odd - it doesn’t look like the standard bushed fitment.

or a 2014 Fox Float CTD Rear Shock http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/fox- ... prod126594 but i’m struggling to work out which tune i would need - the only tunes available in the 190x51 size are CMNN

alternatively there is a 2015 2014 Fox Float CTD Rear Shock with a CWK4 or CWK4 tune http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/fox- ... prod150948

any ideas or recommendations appreciated!

The RP23 is better than the CTD.
Specialized use odd fittings so you not fit any standard shock.
TF Tuned can take your Triad and an RP23 to build an RP23 which will fit.

another alternative is a bike yolk that allows you to fit other shocks but its not going to be cheap.

my bike is a 2009 FSR, so has a vertical shock rather than a horizontal shock so the bike yoke solution is unnecessary.

My research on here seems to indicate that whilst a 190x51 is not ideal, it should fit, not foul anything. it is 5mm longer, but the stroke is 5mm more which kind of cancel things out somewhat - which may mean the travel is now 132m rather than 120mm on the back, but i’ve a 100-140mm travel fork. the shock bushes that came off are the standard 12.7mm xM8 and 15.8mm wide

Longer is bad, it'll steeped the head angle and make the bike less stable. Longer stroke is also bad, you might not have the clearance on the linkage or something else which could be a problem on full compression or top out.
5mm shorter would be better as long as you keep the same stroke.

As the I2I compressed is the same as before, that clearly won't be an issue.

Raising the rear by that much will steepen the bike slightly but you could offset that by running a bit more sag and increasing the progression to counter it.
Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.

    Thanks for all the replies.
I Spoke with TF Tuning and Mojo. it seems the shock is hydraulically locked following damper seal failure. it can be fixed as part of a service, but I'm going to live with it until I get a new 184x44 2017 Fox Float DPS Performance from Mojo in the new year.
    cheers!

Thanks. :) I looked at RS Monarchs earlier and the problem is no-one has 184x44 stock. Mojo only have 1 Fox Float DPS Factory in stock at £455 and one Float DPS performance coming in in mid Jan at £320. TF tuning may have a Cane creek at £400, but its a lot of cash to spend on a 8yr old bike.

I’ve first option on the Fox DPS performance and I’ve a 190x51 2014 float CTD arriving tomorrow from CRC - i’ll have a think on whether to fit the CTD or wait till mid jan for the Float DPS.

What would you do? right size of DPS but pay either £320-£450 or go for the slightly out of spec but cheaper CTD at £170?

I'd have the one I already have serviced.

could do, but it has failed twice now in the last couple of years... at some point i’m tossing good cash after bad - a service is about £100.
Both Mojo and TF were not particularly complimentary about the Triad - saying of all the fox shock, this is the one that is most likely to fail as it is highly stressed even at rest because of super high N2 pressure and a tiny 0-ring - so a change might be an improvement

Fair enough. I thought it was just an RP3 with a different name.

thanks for that... very helpful :)
    ok.. final question!
CRC have a 188x44 2014 CTD evolution for £130... in stock
what is the difference between the CTD evolution and the Performance DPS?
I read the CTD evolution is essentially a reworked Triad, but i’m not sure and struggling to get definitive info.
Would the DPS Performance be a better shock? (i think it might)
    Thanks

The evolution is at the bottom of the Fox tree and the CTD Evo were really rather horrid when they were first launched, they improved about a year ago a bit but CRC's may well be an older unit, I'd steer clear of that to be honest.
